The next night, when Kel stood to go through the halls, Neal closed his book and stood with her. Faleron hesitated, then got to his feet, as did Merric. Seaver was already opening the door.

"That was great!" Merric exclaimed when he and Faleron returned to his room after they finished patrolling the halls with Kel and the rest of their friends. "Did you see the look on Vinson's face when he saw all of us in the hallway?"
Faleron made a rude noise and said, "Vinson is a putrid pustule on our posteriors."
Merric gave his kinsman a confused look.
"He's a pimple on our arses, you illiterate dolt!"
"Hey!" Merric protested. "Don't call me a dolt just because I don't use all those fancy-dancy words! Especially since I've got better marks on my mathematics work than you."
"Fine. You're right. Sorry." Faleron glanced sheepishly at him and then smiled widely. "That was fun, though. I can't wait for tomorrow night - perhaps we'll actually catch Joren and his lot messing with one of the other first-years."
"Hmph!" Merric said as he flopped onto his bed and began to pull off his boots. "You mean, as long as it's some other first-year page and not me."
"Of course."
Merric sat up and asked, "Don't you have to turn in that extra mathematics homework by the end of the week? You know, the assignment you got as punishment because of your dismal marks on that exam last week. There, I just used one of your words: dismal."
"Blast!" Faleron exclaimed. "I totally forgot about that assignment. Maybe Kel can help me with it tomorrow."
"Not if she's on hall patrol with the rest of us. You'll just have to miss out on tomorrow night's fun." Merric smiled at the thought of getting to spend more time in Kel's presence without being in his kinsman's shadow.
Faleron gathered up his books and scrolls and headed for the door. "Then I'll just have to go back to her room right now and beg for whatever help she's willing to give me tonight."
"But study hours are almost over!"
"There's still a half-bell's worth of time."
"What if Kel's working on other homework?"
"She'll help me," Faleron said with confidence and then added, "In fact, I'm sure Kel actually likes to spend time helping me."
Merric raised an eyebrow and said "Oh, really? What makes you so sure of that? I think Kel likes to help all of us."
Faleron merely grinned at his kinsman, bid him goodnight and hurried back to Kel's room. Merric sat on his bed for a while and refused to acknowledge the tight feeling in his chest as he thought about Faleron spending more time - even if it was only a half of a bell - with Kel than he did. Little did he know that this wouldn't be the last time he felt this way.
