Kel tried to will more vigor into aching muscles. At breakfast Faleron and Prince Roald had said that everyone was exhausted when they first donned the harness, or when new weights were added, but Kel didn't remember if she had noticed the older pages struggling last year.
"I heard the third day's worse," Neal moaned as the bell rang. It was their signal to lurch to the yard where Lord Wyldon and Sergeant Ezeko drilled them on staff combat.
"I just want to live through today," said Merric as they filed down the hill.

Merric moaned and blew out a pathetic sigh as he slowly lowered his aching body into the warm water of the bath. All of the second-year pages were struggling to keep up with their new physical regimen; the weighted harnesses were quickly taking their toll. Faleron tried not to laugh, but a snicker escaped his lips and his cousin glared back at him.
"It's not funny, Faleron!" Merric growled, willing the dirt to fall off of his grimy skin of its own accord. He was too tired to scrub his body clean today.
Faleron shook his head. "Oh, for crying out loud - quit your whining, Merric! It's an embarrassment to both you and that new page you're sponsoring now. What's the poor lad supposed to think? You don't hear Kel complaining about how tired she is."
"Bugger off," Merric grumbled, "You're heartless and cruel."
"Oh, really?" Faleron said as he finished getting dressed, "I don't recall receiving any words of kindness or encouragement from you last year when I was a solid ache from head to foot."
"You never said anything about how blasted awful the harness was!" Merric retorted.
Faleron smiled wryly and said, "That's exactly my point."
