Faleron, whose fire chestnut was Peachblossom's neighbor, leaned on the rail between the stalls. "Kel, I'm still not sure about that catapult problem," he confessed, embarrassed. He knew more Tortallan law than any other page, but mathematics came hard for him. "If I fetch it to lunch, would you take a look?"
Kel nodded. "You didn't have to ask, you know."
Faleron grinned. "Mama raised me polite."
In a nearby stall Garvey muttered, "So, Faleron, you're friends with her now because you can have her whenever you want?"
Faleron threw down his brush and went for the other boy....

Sleep was elusive that night. Faleron stared up at the ceiling and recounted the day's activities, especially the events which led up to the virtuous brawl against Garvey, Joren and their supporters. Lord Wyldon had punished everyone severely. The problem was that while Garvey's remarks had been offensive and crude, deep down inside of his heart, Faleron was afraid that he wouldn't really mind if those crass words became true someday.
Of course, he'd never just want to 'have' Kel in the way that Garvey meant. Faleron liked Kel. He really, really liked Kel, but neither of them was of a proper age to enter into any sort of a courtship. And Merric had been right about him the previous year; he did take advantage of the fact that his horse was stabled next to Kel's horse and he flirted with her all the time. He doubted that she took notice, though, because she always seemed to be oblivious to his bright smiles and kind gestures toward her.
Faleron wouldn't hesitate to defend Kel's virtue if anyone questioned it, but he certainly didn't want his actions to be the catalyst for another big brawl like the one in the stables today. Therefore, he decided that he'd better act less interested in Kel - so that Joren and his cronies wouldn't have another excuse to harass or insult her. The arrogant heir to Stone Mountain was always causing problems for the girl page and many of the other boys were becoming increasingly tired of his antics, too. Justified or not, though, Lord Wyldon probably would dismiss all of the pages if he caught them brawling again.
Tossing and turning in his bed, Faleron just couldn't get comfortable. Yes, he knew it would be best if he stopped flirting with Kel altogether. Yes, he wanted her to respect him and trust him as a good friend. And yet, despite his decision to tone down his affection for Kel, there was no rest for the weary Faleron that night.
