Kel's attention wavered; Faleron smacked her collarbone with his staff. The force of the blow drove her to her knees as pain shot like lightning through her right side.
"Kel, you didn't block it!" cried Faleron, appalled. "Neal--"
"Back in line, Page Nealan!" Ezeko ordered as he came over. "If there's a break, she'll see a proper healer!"
-- Tamora Pierce, Page
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Faleron's tanned face looked ashen and his dark eyes were tight with worry. "Kel, I'm so very sorry!" he whispered. "I apologize for hurting you. I didn't mean to, I truly didn't--"
"Faleron, that's enough!" Kel hissed under her breath. "Stop apologizing, right now!"
Lord Wyldon had put them with different sparring partners and now they were standing next to each other. Prosper of Tameran, one of the new first-year pages, appeared to be afraid of his staff and it was easy to see that his blows against Kel were hardly effective. Still, Faleron felt tremendously guilty. How could he have hurt the person he cared about the most? He knew it was an accident, but that didn't diminish the horror of his actions.
"But Kel--"
"No, I mean it, Faleron!" She shook her head slightly, trying to be inconspicuous. "Sergeant Ezeko said that I'll be fine. Nothing's broken. If you keep fussing over me like this, Lord Wyldon is going to be more upset than he already is."
"But what if--?"
Whack! Pain shot through Faleron's lower leg. Kel had landed a lightning-fast blow to his unprotected shin bone and he knew he'd have a bruise there. He glanced over at her out of the corner of his eye and saw that she had the slightest hint of a smile on her Yamani-blank face.
"Apology accepted?" She quietly asked him and resumed blocking against Prosper's weak blows.
All Faleron could do was nod his agreement. Apparently, there had been enough apologies between them for one morning.
