Title: Letting Go II
Rank: PG-13
Length: 349 words
Character: Dom
Summary: Kel sees so much of Dom in her son that she can’t let him go.
Did the stormwings find him? She found herself wondering again. The Own had had no time to bury their dead when they were attacked on the road. Or did the Scanrans find him and string him up for all to see? Or did he lay forgotten, rotting on the ground like a discarded animal carcass? Frankly, she didn’t know which option she found more sickening. Her stomach clenched at the unavoidable situation; she knew Raoul would have taken him home if he could.
Closing her eyes, she forced his body from her mind. He would not want her remembering him that way; a lifeless, mauled body. Instead she recalled how nervous he was when he announced to her that men in the Own could now marry. The way he smiled when she was walking down the aisle. The way he was so gentle the first time they made love. The way his eyes lit up when she told him they were having a baby. He had been so excited to become a father; it was not right that he never had the chance to meet his son.
Kel was lost in thought as she gazed down at the little boy in her lap, absentmindedly squeezing him against her.
“Mama, too tight!” the toddler complained, looking up at her with those amazing sapphire-blue eyes.
Easing her grip, she brushed a strand of black hair out of his face. “Sorry, dear,” she murmured. “I was thinking.”
“About Dada,” the boy said knowingly.
Kel forced a smile and gave a short nod. She was only absentminded when she thought of him. Even the child noticed. She would get frustrated with herself for letting her mind drift so often. But how could it not? Every time she looked at her son, she saw him.
“Look at me please,” Kel commanded. Sapphire eyes looked intently into her own. Confused, the little boy raised his eyebrows in a way that was very characteristic to the Masbolle/Qeenscove line. How am I supposed to let go? She thought, when pieces of him are still here with me.
