Title: Forbidden Fruit Rating: G Length: 131 words Competitor: Owen Round/Fight: Final Summary: Missed opportunities are a way of life, but sometimes regret is hard to handle.
-----
“A girl is like a fruit,” Owen’s mama once told him, long ago. “Plucked too soon, and it’s not sweet enough and often sour. Plucked too late, and it’s a mess. You have to find the perfect one. Take your time--you have to find the perfect one. But when that opportunity comes, don’t be afraid to take it.”
At the time, he was still a child, and he didn’t know what she meant. And then, a couple years later, when he met Page Keladry, the words came back to haunt him, and he wondered, and waited, and bided his time. And then he forgot.
Watching her walk toward the priestess, beside whom Yancen waited with a crooked grin, Owen thought of those words again, and realized he missed his chance.

I love his mother's advice, and I also love that he managed to forget it at the key time.
