Title: Midwinter at the Swoop: Or What Might Have Been
Rating: PG
Wishlist: #5 - Sons of the Lioness
Summary: Neal and his family visit the Swoop for the Holiday
“Neal, you came!” Said a small blonde headed man.
“Of course, Alan. I would never miss Midwinter at the Swoop. It is so much quieter than at the palace.”
“It certainly is.”
“Glad you finally are free of the torture that was page and squire duties then, Sir Alan?”
“Of course. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to the palace during a major celebration if I don’t have to.”
“Like mother, like son.”
“What did you say Sir Nealan?”
“Nothing,” Neal replied shaking his head.

Several hours later, Yuki came into the library carrying a very small, very grumpy child. Neal got up and walked over to where her husband had fallen asleep reading a book. Gently shaking him, “Neal, can you wake up?”
Jumping to alertness, he leapt up pretending to have never been asleep, “I’m awake.”
“Of course you are dear. Can you check on her? I think she has an ear infection.”
Taking his child in his arms, he cradled her head carefully with one hand, releasing his gift to gently examine and treat the infection, that was in fact there. “You were right. It was infected. You know the deal.”
“Well, you don’t live with a healer without picking up on some of this stuff.”
As she turned to leave, Neal couldn’t help but smile.
***
“It was the most amazing thing. You really should have become a healer.”
“I am perfectly happy being a sorcerer. I will leave all that soft healing stuff to you and my mom.”
“Healing isn’t soft. It is smaller and more precise. It’s about using your Gift in the little ways. Instead of blowing up the country side, I blow away clots and debris. If you even tried to focus your magic towards healing, you would probably end up killing your patient.”
The red headed man looked at his slightly older counterpart, and started to smile. “To each his own, I guess.”
“Yeah. Who knows? You might have become a knight if Alan had died part way through your training.”
“I doubt it, but you never know. Gods be thanked.”
That comment was all it took before Neal started to cry, which was stupid because he was a knight and knights didn’t cry. Thom stood up and crossed over to his friend. Quietly, he whispered, “It will all be okay.”
Without saying anything Thom put his arms around Neal allowing the other man to cry for his brothers, for the life that might have been.
