Title: Last Goodbyes
Rating: PG
Length: 501 words
Category: Tortall
Summary: A Knight’s last goodbyes to his lover.
Peculiar Pairing: Raoul/Wyldon
~*~
It should have never started in the first place, but a glance down the list there was something about him that caused me to lose my senses. I lost for the first time that day to the man who would ruin me for any partners after him. My wife understands as her own heart belongs to another.
As I stand here looking upon you, I remember the hours we mapped each other’s skin in the dark, the countless kisses you stole from me, the pints of blood I scratched out of your back and the warmth of your skin in the afterglow.
We never spoke aloud of our feelings for each other, but I know what you felt for me in your actions. You helped me quit drinking and helped me take control of the Own.
This is my last chance to tell you but, I can’t seem to make the words move past my lips. My jaw aches from keeping it clenched to keep the tears at bay as the priest chant their prayers over you. It reminds me too much of when Alanna saved Jon, I’m sorry I don’t have the gift to barter for your life with The Dark God. If I could I would give my life for yours.
You would call that ridiculous and me a foolish boy for thinking like that oh my love it’s the truth. I would have done anything for you. You could have asked me to do anything, run away with you, killed for you; I would have killed my king and friend for you. You asked nothing of me but I wish you would have asked me to do anything for you.
You did your duty and asked nothing in return. You should have been selfish once maybe what we had together was your one selfish act. I wish I was brave enough to say those three little words, but even with deaf ears I cannot say the words.
The things you had seen, survived and fought, what conquers you is not a battle but old age. That isn’t how you should have gone; no you should have gone down in a glorious battle where bards would sing of your name for generations. You would have hated any song they sung about you.
This is it the last prayers I wish I could shove your wife away to give you one last kiss. That is cruel of me to think of your wife in that way as she knew about our affair from the start and agreed to be our cover as long as you went to her bed but a few times a year. She gave you a beautiful daughter who is looking back at me with a sad smile. She beckons me to stand with her but I can’t. I’m sorry my love I must leave.
“Goodbye, Wyldon, I love you,” Raoul whispered and turned away from the funeral of Wyldon of Cavall brushing tears from his eyes.
