Title: Merely a Matter of Time
Rating: PG
Length: 672
Category: Provost's Dog
Summary: Teodorie is too observant for her own peace of mind.
Peculiar Pairing: Gershom/Sabine
Notes: This was much better in my head before I wrote it, but I'm giving up and posting it anyway.
“Do you think I’m ready?”
Gershom looked up from his pile of papers. “For your Ordeal?”
“Well, that and being unleashed upon the world in general.”
Gershom chuckled. “The Ordeal’s not something you’re ever really ready for, but I think you’ll be fine. You have the makings of a good knight.”
Sabine perched on the edge of his desk. “I’m not going to be a knight though, am I?”
Gershom looked up in alarm. “Surely you’re not thinking of-“
“No,” she interrupted, “I mean I’m going to be a lady knight, and that’s where my education has been lacking. You’ve made me a good person, but…” She leaned in closer, her gaze flicking down to his lips. “You need to show me how to be a woman.”
Gershom swallowed hard.
…………
Teodorie paused just outside her husband’s study door, her brow furrowing slightly as she overheard his soft laugh. She pushed the door open just a little further and looked through to see Sabine on the seat beside him, sitting close and smiling at him. Teodorie smiled to herself as she moved off down the hallway. It was nice to see how close the two of them were; it was almost as though Gershom saw her as another daughter sometimes. The gods knew the poor girl needed some some sort of parent figure, having left Macayhill at such a young age to train for knighthood at the palace. It was a bit unconventional really, for a young girl to have to rely on her knight-master for the guidance she needed, but they seemed to make it work. Somehow over the last four years, the usual lessons for a squire had developed into a shared enthusiasm for Provost’s work, the law, and the people of Corus. Teodorie thought it was sweet to see, and hoped that once Sabine was gone, perhaps Gershom would find something in common with his own daughters to bond over too.
…………
She must have been cracknobbed to have not seen it sooner, Teodorie thought. Thank the gods that at least she didn’t find out until after the Ordeal, and she didn’t have to have that girl in her house any more. Gershom seemed to be sorry, of course, and swore to never take a female squire again, but it didn’t make her feel any better. The worst part was that he didn’t even react when she tried to be furious with him. Teodorie even went so far as to ban him from their chamber on any nights he’d been out and could have been with her, but all he would do was look at her sadly and tell her it was best he didn’t disturb her when he got in anyway. She even gave up on getting him to spend time with his daughters, preferring to keep the girls close to her for her own comfort, just in case.
…………
And perhaps that was where the trouble started again. Time had healed her wounds, and Gershom’s constant and unwavering attention to her had given her trust in him again. She didn’t cause a fuss when Gershom moved the family from the Lower City into the house; after all, the girl had saved Gershom’s job and reputation, and he didn’t seem to be paying too much attention to Mistress Cooper. Truthfully, she thought it was quite sweet of him. It wasn’t until a couple of years later that Teodorie paused by the study door to see two heads bent together over a map on the study desk. She knew that the Cooper girl helped Gershom with his work, but it wasn’t until now that she realised how close the two of them had grown, and how they had the same enthusiasm for the Provost’s Guard. Of course, Rebakah was still only a child, but girls grew into women, and Teodorie knew what Gershom did with young women he was close to. She narrowed her eyes at the pair of them; she knew it was merely a matter of time.
