Jonathan is woken by the sudden removal of his blankets. Calloused hands pull at him in the dark, their familiar and already strong grip the only thing keeping his heart from pounding right through his chest.
“Mithros, where are your boots?”
Jon tries to rub his eyes, but Raoul is dumping cloak and breeches into his arms.
“By the dresser!” Raoul whispers. Gary’s little cry of triumph is short-lived as Raoul tugs them all into the hallway. “Quiet now.”
Jon, lacing up his breeches, glares at his companions and snatches his boots from his cousin. “I can’t believe you’re going through with this.”
“It’s just a prank, Jon.”
“This is the second time, and we’ve done nothing. Ralon needs to be taught a little lesson.”
“Doing this doesn’t make us any better! We’ll get caught!”
Raoul’s face is suddenly very close. “If we don’t do this; then what of the others he’ll bully? Who will protect them?”
Jonathan swallows the lump in his throat, unhappy and afraid and ashamed. “I don’t know why we’re friends.”
Gary grins from behind. “‘Cause you’re still too little to know what’s good for you.”
“Am not.”
“Are too. Listen, Jon. Not all the decisions you make will be good or right.”
Raoul nods, and ruffles Jon’s hair. “Sometimes you have to choose what’s best.”
“How do you know?”
Raoul and Gary shrug. “If you’re wise, you just do.”
