A longer chain would hide it nicely under the shirt, much like Kel's. ^.^

Yeah, I think it would be hidden under her shirt. Jon notices it when she's wearing the dress on the night of her 17th birthday, so I assume that the chain they're on is long enough that it's hidden under her shirt the rest of the time.

Well, it says that she's constantly fiddling with the ember. So I mean, you would think it would be outside her shirt and that she's not sticking her hand down the front of her shirt to grab it all the time. and if she's pulling it out, it seems impossible to keep the pregnancy charm hidden under her shirt at the same time.
Maybe it's two chains?

I was under the impression the ember was like a choker.

It might be, I can't remember as I haven't read the book yet, cos I'm supposed to be studying. Yet I'm still here.

Ok, reading the book right now. I'm at the point where Alanna finds Thor dying in the forest, and she uses her Gift to kill him.
Then later, Alanna is alone and Roger comes up with his Gift, and it suddenly struck me that he could kill her just by touching her!
I mean, it makes sense that if you can bring life you can bring death. But just imagine how effective a serial killer could be, and no one would know that the deaths weren't natural!
Thoughts?

They might leave a magical residue like the Emalam books.

I should hope so... *gulp* And then this brings to light so many other kinds of crimes you can get away it. If you can throw daggers at your enemy then there are no fingerprints and no blood on your clothes since you are far away, and I bet magic fades with time, so if no one discovers the body for a couple of hours... The perfect murder.

Sorry to diverge, but when Coram comes back to Corus to ride off and accompany Alanna in her "adventures", who's left to admin over Trebond? Thom? I must have missed that part.
And, whatever happened to the mirage Thom put on Alanna's shield? We know its really the Lioness Rampant, yet did the Trebond crest just disappear as soon as she was revealed as a female?

When Alanna went to go visit her brother (it's when George gets shot with an arrow on the way back) they stop by Trebond and meet the guy who Coram's training to rule Trebond when they're not at home. No names are given for the guy or his family. :\
I guess either it was preprogrammed to change or Thom did it himself. More likely than Thom changed it himself.

ItHotG is my favorite of all the books, and it has one of my very very very favorite Myles scenes, when Jon is about to tell him Alanna's secret and Myles says "I would rather hear it from Alan, when he's ready to tell me." I think that line, and when he later tells her that he's known for years but he's glad she finally told him, says a lot about the kind of person Myles has and the way he cares about Alanna.
Also, "I can't wait to see their faces!" Also also "How about 'Raoul'?" Also also also when they're giving Alanna her 18th birthday gift and Gary and Raoul fight over who is actually going to do the talking.
And suddenly, the reason WHY ItHotG is my favorite has become clear to me.
