Title: This Time
Rating: PG
Prompt: #21 Games
Summary: SPOILERS FOR BLOODHOUND? Set after Terrier, but the last part is set after Bloodhound, when Beka returns.
A/N: I'm trying to slowly ease myself into writing PD I'm not entirely happy with this, but it's not a bad start I guess.
"Rosto, your whining is irritating me."
Raising his head from the table, Rosto looked at Aniki. She sat polishing her dagger, chair tilted back so that it rested against the wall. "I wasn't whining," he said, defensively. "I was just saying - "
"You were whining," she interrupted, stopping to glare at him. "All you talk about these days is 'Beka this' and 'Beka that'. It could drive a mot to murder, I swear," she finished, pointing her dagger at him.
"I wasn't whining," he muttered again, under his breath. Aniki gave him a look.
The two of them were walking to the Court of the Rogue. It was early evening, light enough that the shopkeepers hadn't put up their torches yet, but dark enough that Rosto could see the shadows that accentuated Aniki's razor sharp cheekbones every time he glanced at her. They walked in silence, Rosto with his hands dug in the pockets of his breeches. After a moment, Aniki couldn't take it any longer.
"By the Gods, would you stop looking at me like that," she snapped, turning her dangerous eyes on him. "If you've got something to say, just say it."
Rosto felt slightly irritated. Being around Aniki seemed to bring out the worst in him. "You won't like it. It's about Beka."
He didn't turn to see her reaction, but her tone was controlled. "Rosto, when will you stop playing games with her. She's obviously not interested."
"But she is!" he protested. "I know she is, it's just that..."
Aniki sighed and stopped to look at him. "It's just that she takes her work as a Dog more seriously than you thought, and is smart enough to know you're trouble. Wouldn't it be best just to leave her be?"
"Kora and," he began.
"Kora and Ersken can worry about themselves," Aniki said firmly. "If the law comes between them, they'll have to handle it. But you, you've got more determination than Kora will ever have, and Beka knows it."
She was right. He wasn't planning on being a rusher for Kayfer forever.
"Fine," he sighed. "I'll leave off chasing her for a while."
"Good idea." She paused. "Now, I reckon I've got time before Dawull's expecting me. Fancy a drink?" She smiled slyly.
Rosto grinned. "I think we've got time for more than a drink."
He smiled. He acted like everything was normal. But underneath, he was raging. A thousand doxies couldn't have quenched his desire, the day he heard the news.
And Beka just sat there, smiling and laughing, glad to be home. Wearing another man's trinkets, when she had never accepted a thing from him.
Time was up for Beka. The game was back on, and this time he would win.
