Title: The Cat Came Back
Rating: G
For: Tamari
Prompt: Faithful/Pounce chooses a new companion, and it's someone we know.
Summary: The Cat chooses a new companion and meets the daughter of an acquaintance.
Notes and Warnings: Enjoy! I loved this prompt.
It was simple enough for the Cat to attach himself to ten-year-old Mequen Hetnim. He simply curled up next to where he snoozed, hidden in the midday shade of a courtyard garden. When they both woke up after a very good nap, it was the most natural thing for the sleepy boy to start petting the black kitten, and talking to him, and for the Cat to allow himself to be picked up when a servant found Mequen and called him back to his father’s office.
“Papa, I found a lost kitten. I think he likes me.”
The boy’s father paused in his conversation with a richly dressed raven-haired woman and glanced at the Cat, where he lounged bonelessly in Mequen’s gentle arms. He was definitely not lost, but there would be time to sort out these kinds of misapprehensions later.
“He does look very comfortable,” agreed Mequen’s father. The Cat knew that he was Zaimid Hetnim, and a favourite of the Graveyard Hag. And she certainly does have a soft spot for handsome young men, the Cat thought as he regarded the man. It was at the Hag’s request that he chose to look in on Zaimid’s son and guide him. The boy was Gifted, and the Cat could already smell the beginnings of the power he would one day command.
“Can I take him home?” Mequen’s voice was full of hope.
“Hmmm… I think not, son. He might already belong to someone else. But put him down for now and remember your manners, please. We are not alone.”
The Cat decided to ignore the idea he was staying here as Mequen rushed to obey his father. Greetings over, Zaimid walked around his desk and pointed to what was clearly Mequen’s abandoned lunch tray and school work. He then spoke quietly into his son’s ear.
The Cat took his opportunity to jump up and climb onto the woman’s lap. You have the look of both your parents, he meowed. Then added smugly, I helped to introduce them, you know.
Kalasin Illiniat’s eyes widened as she looked at him properly. He could see the pieces fall into place in her mind. Yes, definitely like both of her parents, and this close, her Gift tickled his nose with many of the same notes as her father’s. It was oddly comforting to his new mortal senses.
“You’re the Cat,” she whispered.
Indeed. But please don’t reveal me yet, he told her.
A brief smile curved her lips. “Very well. Your plans are your own, Great One.”
“My apologies, your Majesty. You dropped in just as I was trying to draw Mequen back to the classwork his Masters set him for the summer,” said Zaimid, sheepishly.
Kalasin seemed to recollect herself and waved his words aside. “I know, Binur loses focus after lunch too. It’s this heat.”
The adults resumed their conversation about the charity hospital they were both patrons of, so the Cat jumped down and bounced back to Mequen and his half-finished lunch, the hunger pangs of a mortal body getting the better of him. It had been a while since he’d tasted cheese, and his meowed comment resulted in a hand bearing a slice of the dairy treat dropping down to his level. The Cat purred as he daintily licked it. Delicious.
“You need a name,” Mequen whispered, picking him up. “Midnight? Ah, no, you don’t like that. Too obvious. What about Cloud? No?”
The Cat protested that he was used to looking down upon clouds.
“Hm. How about Comet? That’ll do?”
Comet thought he and Mequen would do very nicely together.
