Title: Eat Snakes
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Summary: Jia Jiu and the flavors of northern and southern Yanjing.
Eat Snakes
“Is it true you southerners eat snakes?” Fei Fei asked Jia Jiu as they sat at the long, low tables that filled the dining hall of their magical boarding school in Yan, the Summer Capital.
The lo mein noodles--noodles were more common than rice here in northwestern Yanjing--Jia Jiu slurped were rather like snakes.
“Snakes are a delicacy in the south,” she said. Ashamed but also somehow proud of the poor, backward south that had bred her.
A delicacy because they had little else to eat.
“I guess you southerners really will eat anything.” Fei Fei’s eyes were full moons.

I like this - divided by a common country! I think we’ve all had a similar experience

I like this - divided by a common country! I think we’ve all had a similar experience Thanks so much for reading and commenting! I am so glad that you like this. In my head canon, Yanjing is a very diverse country in terms of food, language, climate, etc. so I really enjoyed being able to explore some of the differences in regional cuisine in Yanjing. And I think you are right that we have all had that divided in a common country feeling! I know I certainly have and could draw on that feeling in writing this fic!

This is really great! It's nice to see someone writing about something closer to home- and I love eating lo mein, or whatever it's called in chinese... I think it's 炒面 (chao mian) or something. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm really bad at this.

Thank you so much for commenting! So glad that you found this so great. I'm also a huge fan of lo mein and Chinese food in general (or at least the version of Chinese food that exists in America. I haven't had the chance to travel to China myself though I hope to be able to one day when I have more money to afford international travel).
And I definitely am not in a position to correct you since I am not Chinese myself. I try to do research before I write so I can be sensitive to the culture, but I don't consider myself an expert and will freely admit my ignorance!

As someone with Chinese heritage, I grew up eating food like this and you don’t actually need to go to China just to eat it! I’m pretty sure America has some good places for food, and you could even consider coming to Singapore (I think it’s cheaper?!?) because the food there is equally good
