Title: Optiks Rating: PG Word count: 35 Summary: Briar finally understands where Ace!Sandry is coming from. Notes: I'm not suggesting Briar is glorifying his own or others philandering, but rather that society as a whole does. Title is "Optiks" by Isaac Newton.
It took Briar a long time to understand that the real reason Sandry disliked him talking about his relationships was because society glorified wanton philandering in a man, but shamed happy singledom in a woman

And especially true, I should think, for Sandry, being a noble and so close to the duke. Winding Circle seems much more accepting, but we don’t know about wider Emelanese society.

I like the realization Briar comes to both about society and about Sandry's happy singledom.

Thanks Mistrali and Devils!
I admit, I took some liberties with assuming that Emelan as a whole would be less accepting, so that I could use this fic arc as a commentary on our real-world society. Namorn, with the marriage kidnapping custom, did seem to be a bit more restrictive, but it's possible that Emelan would be more open and accepting because of the Winding Circle/Living Circle influence. But, as Mistrali said, Sandry's noble status might still place certain social expectations on her regarding marriage and offspring, so I thought I could get away with it.

It’s also possible that the Living Circle/Kurchal Empire is very accepting of homosexuality, since there don’t seem to be many waves made about it (concerning you-know-who) even in Namorn (I’m pretty sure Namorn’s also under the Living Circle - the kidnapping custom is a holdover from the previous empire starting with H, whose name I can never remember). However, they may not understand asexuality/aromanticism at all.
I can also see it going one of three ways with Rosethorn. Either lots of bi erasure like in your fic, or widespread acceptance of bisexuality. I can also see a scenario where bisexuality isn’t really a concept in the same way it is in our world. We don’t know if Tradertalk has a specific word for bisexuality - maybe you use nisamohi, but it’s qualified with “I’m also attracted to men” (and the reverse for men, obviously - they’d use the Tradertalk word for a gay man but also say they’re attracted to women). Or you say that you date both men and women, or something.
(None of this is to take away from your fic- just speculating!)
Incidentally, I wonder about nb people. And trans people, for that matter.
