Fix It What
It's hard to be perfect all the time, and even our favourite authors can get things wrong! Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to rectify those little errors which have crept into canon. Douglass is Raoul's squire in the Dain scene, and then Gary's when they're ice-skating - well, a change is as good as a rest when raising squires! Roger is able to take Alex on as squire despite not being a trained knight... does Roald exercise special discretion in Roger's favour? To make it a little easier to compete, you can also fix things that are canon if you wish they weren't... special points to anyone who rewrites the end of Mastiff. When14-30 September Where

Normal Goldenlake fanfiction rules on ratings and content apply. 2. There is a 100 word minimum, but there is no maximum. 3. All pieces must be new, and while they are allowed to be part of a larger arc, they must be able to stand alone. 4. There are no restrictions on how many fixes there are - if someone (even yourself!) has already 'fixed' a particular piece of canon, and you have a new spin on it, go right ahead and write a new entry!

Do I still get the special points if I have an idea for how to fix Mastiff, even if I don't get it written in time?

Sounds neat. Hopefully I can come up with something for this.

*cough* Battle Magic *cough* Good luck if you take that one on mistrali! I've only read it the once when it first came out, but it would be a doozy!

Oh, yes, I threw it out because I was so disappointed. I’ll see if I can bring myself to listen to it again - or just make something up based on WOTE? Other ideas: Any number of Trickster fics, racebent Night One and Burning Brightly One, Bazhir!Naxens (and therefore Bazhir!Jon), Bazhir!Alanna (through her connection to Seaver).

I might like to write a story where Thom doesn't raise Roger from the dead and maybe another one where Thayet does take the Dominion Jewel when it is offered her and decides to stay in Sarain. I always wonder what it would have been like if she could find a way to rule Sarain. It's not that I dislike her marriage to Jon, but exploring another version of events, a path that could have been taken but wasn't, could be interesting. I think those would both be allowed under the guidelines.

Do I still get the special points if I have an idea for how to fix Mastiff, even if I don't get it written in time? Naturally!

Heeee, I might have a list of story ideas for this event. (soooo many continuity errors to address!) Now if I can just get back into the writing zone!

Rosie, I think I was confused about the difference between fixing canon and AU's, but I can definitely wait until January to write those ideas. Gives them more time to marinate in my mind. Especially the Thayet idea. I could see that turning into a long, complicated story if I want to try to do it justice.

Definitely my fault for the lack of clarity in the guidelines... or we could always blame it on Mastiff since my mind was on fixing that particular part of canon!!

I'm fine with blaming it all on Mastiff, ha ha.

So, to try and get this straight in my mind, where would writing about Alex's motivations in SOTL fall? It's never seemed clear to me what his motivations were for joining Roger and wanting to kill Alanna. Would writing something to explain that count as a "fix it" or would it just be regular fanfic?

For my money, a fix-it is based on a (usually plot- or world-related) gripe you have with canon, e.g. Mastiff, Trickster, the inconsistencies in Battle Magic, the lack of decent magic-testers. Obviously Rosie has the final word, but I’d imagine that would still count as a fix-it, since most people agree it’s a big hole in canon that needs, well, fixing up.

Yes, I think I'm with mistrali here. Let's go with, if it needs quasi-canon to explain it, it needs fixing! (debating about promoing this on tumblr, but really, I'm not sure that ever gets us any extra participants. Moreover, I know Tammy comes across our tumblr posts sometimes and however good-natured this event is intended to be, it might not feel that way if she saw the post)

I am already excited even though I don't have anything in mind. I'm always for Mastiff fix-its.
Since I'm not exactly sure: do fix-its apply to quasi-canon too?

I don't think Tumblr has gotten us extra participants lately and I think it might be possible to misconstrue the event intentions outside of Glake.

Putting this down here before I forget, but I'm interested in the mild inconsistency with Lerant now. He talks about his family not being able to afford a knight's gear - which, fair enough, but the Mindelans aren't exactly rich either given their family size, and Kel mentions that she's fortunate a squire's gear is paid for by their knight.
It's not irreconcilable (e.g. Lerant could just be lying), but I think there's a point of tension between Kel being able to get some form of armour and weapons via her knight-master (and being supposed to, in fact), while Lerant cites financial concerns as keeping him away from knighthood.

That's interesting, I wonder if any part of that is that firstly, he couldn't be sure of a good knightmaster, being from a traitorous fief, and secondly, he couldn't be sure of being granted Crown purses after he'd achieved knighthood? Since the Crown is clearly still intent on beggaring the fiefs through the Progresses, I wonder if there are other restrictions on the families gaining Crown funds through other means.
Also - the event is now officially open!

Hmmm, this is interesting food for thought. I had interpreted it as the up-front cost of being a page (since Kel gets a lot of advantages from her benefactor, even the purchase of a horse & tackle). Also, while Mindelan is not exactly rich, I wonder if there's also the fact that Eldorne has extra expenses/taxes put upon them, as alluded to during the Progress when the traitor-fiefs have to host/feed the travelers at their own expense. I could see Jonathan completely beggaring them, a la Louis XIV, to prevent future insurrection. But yes! I want to see how you explore this!!

I forgot about Kel's advantages, since I vaguely remembered the Crown mount issue. I assume that Lerant must have basic gear since he tried for man-at-arms - but yes, I will stop derailing, I just wanted to share my appreciation, thank you!
