Title: Floriana Rating:G Summary and Warnings: Berenene losing her Aliput lilies, from Isha’s POV. No warnings. Event/Prompt: Cold Snap (Triathlon 2020) Words: 100
******
Berenene's chestnut hair tumbled around her shoulders. "They're all gone, Isha," she said helplessly. "Do you know how much these cost?" She gathered up the little flowers in a handkerchief, like a shroud. What a waste of gold. Never mind that she had two gardens, each with scores of native blooms. Here she was despairing over lilies.
In some ways she was as simple as a child, thought Isha. The thought had that double edge of fondness and exasperation that she felt whenever she considered the new empress. Set an untried girl to rule and this was what you risked.

I like the glimpse of Berenene mourning flowers and gathering them in her handkerchief "like a shroud" (what a great detail) and Isha's thoughts about Berenene early in her reign--about setting an untried girl to rule--and how that thought is laced with both fondness and exasperation. So glad you focused on these two characters since they are both interesting ones!

Thank you devilinthedetails! Berenene’s interest in flowers is one of my favourite aspects of her character. Since Berenene and Isha are both such cold customers behind the scenes, I thought it’d be interesting to show some vulnerability here. It’s one of the few times we see a more human side to Berenene, yet even in the greenhouse she’s still very reserved, and doesn’t really let loose. She’s clearly passionate about plants, but I think she’s also naturally restrained and careful in some ways, very detail-oriented. I was a bit nervous about posting this because I adapted an old drabble that’s been sitting around on my hard drive for ages, so I’m glad it worked for you!

This is a lovely piece, I like how Isha seems to think Berenene should be satisfied with the other flowers, and how Isha is considering Berenene's suitability for ruling.
