Title: A Question of Taste
Rating: G
For: Everyone
Prompt: N/A
Summary: Yuki asks for Kel's help to decipher a bit of, frankly, indecipherable poetry.
Notes and Warnings: I'm being a bit cheeky here - last week, I was struck with the sudden and very strong urge to write Neal's poetry. No one has a prompt that fits, so I thought I would make it a gift for everyone (and get it out of my system). After all, in times such as these, who doesn't need some poetry from Tortall's premier bard?
Winged archessweep soar over
the twinkling lights
of the windows they frame.
Neat and trim, theysit perch
perfectly positioned
and immaculately kept.
Their divineblackness darkness
makes a perfect contrast
to the smooth golden bridge
that rises majestically [behind/above?].
They move seldom,
but when they do,
their perfect synchronicity
encapsulates their grace.
Winged arches soar over
the distance between us
and pierce my heart.
Oh! how lovely they are!
How perfectly they capture
her beauty and grace. [Used already - maybe charm?]
Dear Keladry,
I hope this missive finds you well, after your return from war (I understand that "missive" is a more appropriate military term for "letter").
I am sorry to write to you and disturb your well-earned rest with such an odd request, but I hope you can help me solve a puzzle. I found the enclosed piece of paper amongst Neal's things as I tried to organise the study (I wanted to make it a more tranquil room; I don't see how it will be much use in its current state).
Neal wasn't as pleased as I'd hoped with my efforts, though I think he'll come around when he realises how much easier the room is to use. He also reacts peculiarly when I ask him about his prose and poetry. I know he writes it, but he seems strangely reticent to share it with me, though he'll show me countless poems of other Tortallan writers.
So I thought I would ask you, in case you have any knowledge to share with me. Do you know what this poem is about? It is in Neal's handwriting and although I can usually understand what he says (certain monologues and tangents aside), I can make neither skulls nor tails of this. I am disappointed, because I thought my understanding of the nuances of Common had greatly improved during my time in Tortall. Maybe it is the Western poetry style? I confess, I have never quite seen the allure of it (please don't tell Neal!).
I hope you may visit our new home soon. The garden will hopefully be finished by then and we can have tea outside. Until then, please write and tell me all about your adventures (I'm sure Neal is leaving things out) and, of course, the poem.
Your friend,
Yuki
