At a recent family dinner at a Chinese restaurant, both my sister and partner ordered deep fried ice cream for dessert. I'm not a big fan of either ice cream or deep fried foods, so I thought I'd see what other people think of the idea of deep frying ice cream, or any form of sweet food. Love or hate? Just meh? Has anyone tried the elusive deep fried mars bar I hear stories of?

I admittedly do have something of a sweet tooth so I do love ice cream though I have successfully managed to cut back on it and other desserts. Deep fried foods don't have that much appeal to me in general so the thought of deep frying things that are already unhealthy for me like ice cream, Oreos, or candy bars just makes me feel as if my arteries are clogging up so I probably wouldn't enjoy that dessert, which is really the whole point of a dessert: to enjoy it. I haven't tried those desserts, though, so I can't be sure I would dislike them but at any rate it's most likely best for me to avoid adding more temptations to my life when I am still working to develop healthier eating and exercise habits.

I always thought the appeal of deep fried ice cream was the same as for a baked Alaska; the mix of hot and cold in one dish, and the novelty of cooking something that by definition needs to be frozen.
Can't say I've been tempted enough to try either though!
The fish n chip shop down the road from my house used to do deep fried Mars Bars. They had this awful poster sign in the window that just got more and more sun faded each year until one day it was taken down. Apparently the shop changed hands and the new owners have better taste.

Idleness, you're probably right about the point of fried ice cream being that contrast between hot and cold sensations. Just goes to show how much of a culinary expert I am not. Still for that hot and cold contrast I'd much rather have a scoop of vanilla ice cream over a warm brownie or apple pie. Either of those combinations are simply divine in my opinion.

I can take or leave deep fried ice cream, but for me it’s textural (fried/battered coating, then ice cream inside) much more than temperature.
I’ve heard they deep fry all sorts of things in America - corn dogs and so forth. Seems much more common than it is here.

mistrali, if you ever go to a fair or festival in the US, you probably will see all sorts of fried food, including foods you probably couldn't understand why someone would want to fry. Fried foods are definitely an American indulgence. They just don't tend to be my indulgence of choice, ha ha.

Interesting you think of it as an American indulgence - in the UK, I'm used to thinking of it as a Scottish quirk. Pretty sure they're the ones who came up with deep fried Mars bars, for better or worse.
