My friends and family all safe, thank goodness. It's absolutely horrifying though, and how dreadful for Christchurch, which has already been through so much trauma in recent years, to now have something like this happen.

Glad to hear all your friends and family are safe.
I've been following the news all afternoon and it's just awful. I really feel for everyone in Christchurch (and New Zealand generally). And yes, especially awful for Christchurch after everything that community has been through in recent times.

Very distressing indeed.
Also seems like there was more than one shooter, with two mosques being hit close together. Christchurch has unfortunately always had a bit of a reputation for having an active fringe community of skinheads/white nationalists, and it's looking like that might be the quarter this attack has come from. :-(

Woke up to this devastating news:( I'm glad that you, your family, and your friends are all safe, Idleness. My heart is with the Christchurch community and especially with the Muslim community there. My condolences to all those who had loved ones injured or killed in these horrible shootings.

Idleness, I’m glad your family and friends are safe. What a horrific thing to happen to Christchurch, of all places. The aftermath of the 2011 quake was bad enough, and now this sort of carnage on top of it. The sheer senseless violence of it boggles the mind. My condolences to the victims and their families, and to Christchurch as a whole.

It's hard to comprehend the scale of it, really, and everyone is very upset. New Zealand is quite a small place - not so small that everyone knows one another, but small enough that everyone knows someone who knows someone. Luckily no one I know was caught up in it, but as more information comes out I now know that friends I grew up with have lost friends in the attack. It's quite devastating. There's some good information here if anyone wants to help.

Such violence and hatred are ultimately incomprehensible to me. That’s as it should be. There’s no way we can truly understand people like them. We could guess at their motives, but that’s about all: getting into their heads is best left to psychologists and psychiatrists. The amount of... I don’t know what to call it - brainwashing, prejudice and hatred it must take to commit an act like that is unbelievable. I’m still trying to process it three days later, and I don’t even live in NZ. Can only imagine the devastation the victims’ loved ones and the shock the Christchurch community (Muslim and non-) must be feeling.

Idleness , thank you for the information on how people can help the Christchurch community after this terrible event. mistrali, I think you are right. We may have a natural inclination to try to make sense of this tragedy by trying to understand the motives of those who would commit so heinous a crime, but in end, we can't fathom them since we aren't trained psychologists or psychiatrists. Our focus is much better spent doing what we can to support the Christchurch community.

One good thing; yesterday afternoon, the Prime Minister announced an effective ban on the military style semi-automatic assault weapons used, with legislation to follow in the next fortnight. Looks like the legislation will also be supported by the main Opposition party too, so that's good.

That's great news. I've been seeing a lot of the coverage here and I remember being shocked at how "behind" the gun legislation was... Australia was meant to be the slower side of the ditch on everything, I thought.
Goodness, my heart goes out to the rebuilding efforts. Bless you all.
