I've just booked a winter holiday for the end of July. I'm going to take a week off work and go on a road trip to sit in various geothermal hot pools. It's just me, since my partner can't sit still for very long. I'm already planning to take my kindle in a zip-lock bag so I can read while I soak. I'm going to go back to work smelling like a rotten egg, but I'll be super relaxed after all of that soaking and my skin will feel amazing haha. I can't wait!

That sounds like an excellent holiday Idleness! I really wish there were hot springs near me.

Well, I'm married!
the day itself was lovely, but just like the planning phase, nothing is ever easy! two of the guests got into a punch up at the end of the night and one of them wanted to press charges, and was messaging us at our hotel demanding the other person's details to press charges. So that was fun! but it all seems to have mostly settled down even if the behaviour of some of our friends left a lot to be desired.
We spent 10 days in Singapore on our honeymoon, but of course I managed to get sick on the second day and was knocked out for most of the trip.

Glad it was lovely but sorry about the fight and the sickness in Singapore on your honeymoon. Hopefully you can go back to Singapore some other time and not get sick.

Congratulations, mageprincess. At least no one can hold you accountable for the behaviour of guests, even if it did leave something to be desired!

Just returned from a short vacation to Disney World and Universal Studios. I hadn't been to Disney or Universal since I was little and had never been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Both the Forbidden Journey and Gringotts rides were awesome, and it was cool to see Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade as well as ride the Hogwarts Express. Now I have some magical memories as well as my new Solo t-shirt, Ravenclaw t-shirt, and McGonagall wand.

My partner and I want to do a big trip to Europe next year. I think I'm going to enjoy the planning as much as the actual trip!
(So, also, open to opinions on 'must do' things - we're looking at about 6 weeks and the only definite is that we'll need to spend about a week of that time in Germany to visit friends).

Idleness, I went to Europe about 18 months ago, and it was amazing. Would def recommend Venice and Switzerland.

Idleness, I went on a two week trip to England, Scotland, and Ireland during the summer of my senior year of college (so longer than I like to think ago, ha ha). In England, I really enjoyed going on hikes in the Lake district, touring the houses where Wordsworth and the Bronte sisters lived, and York and its Minster were cool to explore. Seeing the ruins of abbeys and Castle Howard was also fun. In Scotland, I remember Edinburgh being a neat city and Edinburgh Castle being fun to check out. In Ireland, I really loved the misty green of the landscape (very fantastical feeling) and the welcoming feeling in the pubs where you could just hear random people singing.

Feel free to ask for London recommendations if you wind up coming here! Otherwise, I love Budapest, Berlin, and Barcelona, and Croatia and Slovenia are easily two of the most beautiful places Iβve ever been (specifically Dubrovnik and Lake Bled). Kypriotha has spent a fair amount of time in Germany, so can probably provide recommendations if you need them!

My partner is keen on drinking whiskey in Scotland and I'm keen to pop over to Ireland to visit a family friend, so we'll probably start or finish in London at Heathrow. We're kind of waiting to see what happens with Brexit; eg if we get a car in Europe, will we still be able to put it on a ferry and drive it in the UK or vice versa? How we decide to get around will probably influence a bit of what we do.
(And I won't lie, I'm hoping whatever happens with Brexit is favourable to the NZD to GBP exchange rate... )

It's great that you're thinking of heading down to London too. I was sad that I couldn't fit London in when I went to England, but it was just too far away from everything else I was doing.

Always happy to talk about Germany if recommendations are needed π Sounds like you'll have an awesome time Idleness. It's been two years since I was last in Europe and I'm starting to get itchy feet...

I'm alive! Sort of - new job, I got engaged, I am active in a fandom for another fanfic (which we can really blame TamariChan for... thanks), but I found a discord for Tortall today and remembered this forum and decided to slink back in shame.

Anyone got any upcoming travel plans?
I'm going to fly out to visit my brother in Portland, Oregon from the 3rd of June to the 10th, and I'm so excited. Looking forward to seeing the Pacific Northwest again, and I've never been to Portland, but I've heard it is an awesome city. Anyone here been to Portland and got recommendations on where I should go and what I should do?

Enjoy your trip, devilinthedetails. I don't have any plans except for a quick weekend trip in July to soak in some geothermal hot pools. I've been having a rough couple of weeks. My cat went missing for a couple of days and then reappeared with a big bump on his back and his tail hanging down limply. Turns out he's got some serious nerve damage due to his broken tail and can't pee. He's been at the vets for the last two weeks so they can express his bladder. We're going to give him another week, but if there's no sign of improvement then we'll have to put him down. πππ

It is a horrible, helpless feeling to watch our pets in pain, and to do all we can to ease their suffering, and not have that be as effective as we hope. I really hope that your cat improves this week. I had to put my dog down shortly after Easter this year, and it was probably the worst, most heartbreaking experience of my life. I think I'll remember it forever. So I really hope you don't have to go through that with your cat. Best wishes for his recovery.

That's so sad, devilinthedetails . I hope your loss feels a bit less raw now. Unfortunately it became apparent that my cat would not recover from his injuries, so we made the decision to put him down. My heart is broken now too. I was less weepy yesterday than I was on Saturday, but this morning it was sunny so I hung out some washing and the grief hit me again in full force. Normally for this task on a sunny day like today I'd have a little furry shadow at my feet begging for attention. I'm going to miss him so much. πππ

My grief is a bit less raw now though it still hits me at certain moments, but it helped me a lot to make a photo album with pictures of my dog and a mug with a photo of her dressed up as a butterfly for Halloween. It just made me feel that I had less of a burden to constantly remember everything about her, and now I have a record of the good times I shared with her. Working on artistic projects also just helps me process strong emotions and turn my pain into something beautiful. I'm so sorry to hear that you had to put your cat down, and I absolutely understand how heartbroken you feel. Some days I have definitely been more weepy than others, and I think it is all just moving through the stages of grief and loss. A lot of the daily tasks that we do where we use to have our pets around us can be some of the most painful. Our pets work their ways into our lives in so many ways that it is hard to go through the days without being reminded of their absence. Time and tears are the best healers, though, and I believe the grief will become less raw for you as it has for me, but that doesn't make loss or grief any easier to bear

So sorry to hear about both your losses. It's devastating to lose a treasured pet. I hope you are able to remember and celebrate the good times and that the pain slowly eases.

So sorry to hear about both your losses. It's devastating to lose a treasured pet. I hope you are able to remember and celebrate the good times and that the pain slowly eases. I appreciate the condolences. I've been in contact with a local shelter and I think I might be able to adopt an adult dog who is a sweetie with some anxiety issues to overcome, so I think that will help with the healing process as well by giving me a new pet to love. She needs a quiet, calm environment and I can definitely provide that, so I have my fingers crossed it will all work out.

I have two dogs adopted from the shelter, who'd both been returned several times, and they're so happy and have made such progress living in a loving home. I signed a lease on an apartment in my new city, and my parents are moving into a new house at the same time back home. An exciting time!

Tamari , yes, I was able to adopt an almost six-year-old dog who is part lab and part collie. She is adorable and very sweet. Together we are working to overcome her anxiety about things like walks. She loves to sniff new smells but is nervous about noises. I've also had to teach her how to play with toys since she hadn't gotten to do that much play in her life before being adopted. But she makes me happy and I make her happy, so that's good. That's great that you have two adopted dogs who have made such progress with you. Shelter dogs are great, and you can feel so good about taking them in and giving them a loving home. Congrats on your new lease, and wow, that is a lot of moving in your family if your parents are moving as well. Good luck with alll that moving! I know how much work can go into a move, and how it can be both exciting and scary.

I'm sorry to hear that people have lost beloved pets. I dread the day that something happens to one of mine. I've been quiet recently, I feel like I've missed a lot! Morning sickness has kept me down for the last few weeks.
