Series: Grime and Punishment
Title: Perfect Partners
Rating: G
Event: Synchronised Swimming
Words: 274
Summary: Over the years, Beka and Pounce have established a good routine together.
(I had some idea that not using Beka's name in the fic would focus more on the relationship and less on her as an individual? IDK.)
***
Court days were still hard. She mostly managed not to stutter and to look directly at Sir Tullus when she spoke, but sometimes, when it had been a particularly busy week or there was a more interesting case than usual being heard, the dock would be full and the galleries too and she would lose her nerve and fall into bad habits.
But it wasn’t just those things that made it hard. Getting up early, when she spent so much of her evenings and nights out and the mornings sleeping, that was the real challenge. Waking up early, making sure she was dressed in a clean and presentable tunic, feeding herself, feeding the pigeons, feeding Achoo, letting Achoo outside…all these things took time, especially when she was still three quarters asleep.
At least she didn’t have to worry about Pounce. It wasn’t just that he could take care of himself; they had been together so long that they had developed a comfortable routine with each other. Court days weren’t Pounce’s favourite day either. Often he would want to sleep in and, on those days, he would keep himself carefully out of the way and nap.
But other mornings, when he was feeling particularly charitable or knew she’d had a difficult week, he would wake with her and help. This could take the form of keeping the pigeons at bay when they were being particularly greedy or supervising Achoo on her morning errand or, sometimes, just being a comforting presence whilst she prepared for the long day ahead. Every little bit helped.
As he often reminded her, she had the best partners – Dog or otherwise.
