Title: Let it snow
Rating: G
For: mistrali
Prompt: 1. Niko and Tris genfic. Anything goes, from sweet, light Midwinter celebrations to more serious things like fighting crime or one of them taking care of the other.
Summary: Niko encourages a midwinter miracle…
“I thought you said that meddling with nature was dangerous and not to be done,” Tris said, not looking up from the potato she was peeling.
“That does sound like something I might say to a headstrong student. Of course, you were entirely obedient under my tutelage, so I can’t imagine where you might have heard it.”
Tris glanced up at Niko.
He smiled.
Tris heaved a great sigh and set down her work. Wiping her hands on her apron, she rounded the table and walked over to the window that looked out into the back garden. There was slush on the ground from the previous day’s attempt at snow and Glaki was trying to arrange some of it into a mound. She could understand why Niko had asked for her assistance: watching dear little Glaki trying to make the most out of the muddy sludge rather dampened Tris’s mood.
Her hand went to her hair, but after a moment’s searching with her mind she realised there was no need for that—she found a wisp of cloud floating outside and fed it the joy of cold and ice, working it into a flurry with the help of two contrasting breezes. She could see it through the window now, watched silently as it began to take on the desired form, coaxed it further with a whirl of her fingers and the sudden clench of her fist.
Snow.
Flakes floated from the cloud, softly meeting the ground and melting upon Glaki’s winter coat. The girl glanced up, her mouth grown wide in awe. Tris couldn’t help but smile as she watched Glaki jump up and prance around.
“It doesn’t seem so very dangerous,” Niko said by her ear and Tris jumped, startled at not hearing him approach. She elbowed him, then moved aside so that he, too, could look through the window.
“A couple hours should do it,” Tris murmured. Glaki had her head tilted back, woollen hat slipping precariously, catching snowflakes on her tongue.
Niko draped an arm over her shoulder and turned her away from the window. “Come on,” he said. “I think we have time for a hot drink before the others get back.” Tris allowed herself to be led back to the table and perched her chin in her hand with a smile as her former teacher set the water to boil.
