“When my advisor at the University asked me where I saw myself in ten years’ time,” Neal muttered, rebelliously, “’Standing in the middle of a half-dug latrine pit in the dead of winter’ was not my first thought. Neither is it my first choice.”
“Your protest has been noted,” Merric growled, testily stabbing his shovel at the ground. “I swear, the ground’s all but frozen solid. Are you absolutely certain—”
“Yes,” Neal snapped. “I told you, whoever dug that last latrine did a poor job. The run-off was contaminating the water supply, that’s why everyone was falling—“
“Neal?” Merric said. “I know we’re friends and all, but…shut. Up.”
Huffily, Neal scraped at the soil with his shovel. “I didn’t have to be here, you know,” he informed Merric. “Kel asked for volunteers, and I said to myself, ‘Where would Merric be if he were let out into the untrammelled wilderness alone’—“
“We’re right behind the vegetable gardens!” came Merric’s reply. He straightened up and yanked a frustrated hand through his unruly flaming hair. His breath came out in harsh white puffs of vapour.
“Children,” Kel said, unperturbed by the effort it took to break up the hardened soil with her mattock. “Do you think we could be done in time for the midday meal, please?”
“Dom’s not due in for five hours,” Neal informed her.
Kel said, with an evil grin, “I’m telling Yuki about your collection of erotic poetry.”
“You wouldn’t!” He sighed at the expression on her face, muttered, “Yes, Mother,” and resumed digging.
Merric rolled his eyes, and got back to work.
