i. Affection
The older girl watched in fascination as the toddler managed to hoist herself up and stand, only to fall within seconds. Sarai giggled, “She’s so clumsy.”
“Oh you were very clumsy too sweetheart.” Her mother gently chided her, voice full of humour and love.
“Sai! Sai!” Dove called, reaching for her sister as she stood once more and took a few steps. Sarai stepped forward but tripped and landed next to her on the floor.
The two girl’s giggles filled the air and in a moment of clarity that the small girl was prone to, Dove stated, “We both clumsy.”
ii. Friendship
“And where do you think you’re going?”
Sarai spun in shock, “Dove! Go back to your book,” she hissed.
“You mean the book we are supposedly reading right now?” Dove enquired calmly, somehow even when sounding sincere she kept a hint of her particular brand of sarcasm tucked in the corner of a smirk.
“Well you aren’t coming with me, you don’t even like horses.”
Dove scoffed slightly but remained decisive. “No, I’m going into the city.”
“On your own?” Sarai couldn’t help a thread of concern.
“I’m naturally careful; it’s fine, now go. I won’t tell if you don’t.”
iii. Intimacy
“Oh come on, you have to be a little interested.” Sarai had a conspiratorial slightly exhilarated tone as they stood at the edge of the party.
“Not really,” Dove sounded distinctly bored, “Is it hard to believe that I prefer talking to people than sticking my tongue down their throat?”
“Dove!”
“Well it’s true.”
“I guess, all the boys are so boring though, I can’t be bothered talking to them.” The fluttering group of her friends gestured for her to return but she ignored them and sat down next to her sister.
“So what is the court talk on trade?”
iv. Charity
Dovasary stood at the dock, guards a distance back, Winnamine and Petranne by her side.
“Winna, how do you feel right now? Because I’m not sure.”
“I can’t tell you how to feel Dove. Beyond everything she is your sister” Winnamine said softly as the colourful Carthaki diplomatic barge grew closer.
Dove hesitated, “Part of me still feels betrayed and hurt, but, I really missed her.”
A soft smile crossed her face as she remembered a childhood of laughter and a quiet pact of standing together no matter the circumstances.
“I suppose, in the end, I will always forgive her.”
