Goldenlake Decathlon: Guidelines
WhatThe Goldenlake Decathlon is a fanfiction challenge where authors attempt to complete their choice of a triathlon (three events), pentathlon (five events) and decathlon (ten events) for their chosen couple or character within 30 days. WhenClaiming opens: Wednesday, March 25 Decathlon starts: Wednesday, April 1 Decathlon closes: Thursday, April 30 WhereIn the Events forum. Your Options The TriathlonThe Triathlon is the starting point for the Decathlon, with three events. It’s on a smaller scale, so you can join in on the fun without facing as much of a challenge (and you can build on your events if you find inspiration). Your events are the '400 Word Cross Country', '110 Word Hurdles' and 'Just In Jousting'. The PentathlonNot as intense as the full Decathlon, with a bit more challenge than the Triathlon, the Pentathlon is the middle of the range with five events. The Pentathlon events are the three Triathlon events, plus your choice of two of the full Decathlon events. The DecathlonThe Decathlon is the crème de la crème of the challenge; intense, difficult and amazing fun of ten events. Before you get too worried, it can be completed, with several testimonials in the Library for inspiration. The events for Decathlon are the three Triathlon events plus the remaining seven to make the full Decathlon (listed below). How1. Claim a character or couple (according to the rules) and note whether you are attempting a Triathlon, Pentathlon and Decathlon. Also, note the series name you will be giving your competition (so it's easier to keep track). 2. Have your claim acknowledged by the Event Admin/staff (which will be done in the Claims thread). Rachy and mistrali will be acknowledging claims, so if you have any issues, they'll be the mods to contact. 3. Post your attempt in either the character or couples masterlist (depending on your claim). 4. Complete the event of your choice, posting in the events forum. Update the attempt sheet as you go, and increase your event if you want. 5. Once you have completed your event set, post in the ‘Finish Line’ thread and get congratulated. 6. Start again at #1 with a new couple or character! RulesOn fics…1. Fics must be compliant to the Goldenlake fanfiction rules, including being rating-appropriate and containing sufficient warnings. 2. Where there is a fic length specified (e.g. one sentence, 100 words minimum) that fic length must be adhered to 3. Fics must be about either the character or couple the author has claimed. An author must not complete a decathlon for a couple or character they have not claimed. 4. The masterlist must be updated (with links) for event once that event is completed. On claiming…1. An author may only claim one character and one couple at a single time. The character cannot be a member of the couple, the two must be separate. 2. A claim must be made in the appropriate thread. A competition for that claim cannot begin until the claim has been acknowledged by the Event Admin or Coordinator (Rachy or Mistrali). 3. Only one author may claim a particular character/couple at a time. While that claim is active (i.e. being completed) no one else may claim that character/couple. If an author wishes to progress in the competition with the character/couple, the character/couple will be freed once the author has progressed or completed their events.4. Once an author has finished a competition with their claimed character/couple, the character/couple may be put up for claiming by the Event staff so that another author can claim them. 5. A writer may unclaim a character/couple and claim another as long as they have not begun writing for them. They must notify the Event staff of the unclaim-ing and remove their claim from the masterlist before making a new claim. 6. You may attempt a Triathlon, Pentathlon and Decathlon at the same time, however, they must be for different characters or couples. You may attempt two Triathlons or two Pentathlons at the same time. You may also first attempt a Triathlon and end up completing the Decathlon for the same character or couple by building upon the events. Overall, no more than three events can be completed at the same time (due to character and couple demand and event fatigue (and challenge)). Decathlon Events

Can I just say, I love these event names! This sounds like great fun, and I'm sure we'll see some wonderful fics from people! And also good sports(wo)manship* in the form of reviews *Or, er, sportspersonship, which didn't quite fit in the brackets.

Psst, Rachy, you've got Just in Javelin instead of Just in Jousting under the event codes section.

Just to clarify for anyone who may have been wondering: you don't have to make your claim before Decathlon starts on 1 April. You can make your claim anytime from 25 March to when Decathlon ends. But obviously, the earlier you make your claim, the more time you have to complete the events

Question, on the word limit ones, the 400 word exactly and the 100 word plus type ones make sense. On the others, like the 500/1500 or the 4x100, is that an exact word count? Or a minimum?

Inimiriel, I know for sure that the 4x100 and the 500/1500 aren't minimum. I'm not sure if they're exact or if you can get away with one or two words extra/less here or there - you'd have to check with Rachy on that.

Inimiriel Both events are exact word counts, so the 4x100 is 4 sets of 100 word drabbles and the 1500/500 is either 1500 or 500 words, depending on your choice. For the 100 word plus events, the 100 words is minimum, there is no maximum, so if you do want to write a really long piece that's fine for those events

Once I make a Competition Thread (to list the triathlon, pentathlon, decathlon events), the master list willl go in that thread

Thanks Rachy! Just wanted to make sure on that since one event had said exact but others did not.

For the 110 Word Hurdles, is it just the claimed couple/character's name/s we can't mention, or are all characters' names meant to be left out?
E.g. if I've claimed Daja, can I then mention Sandry in my 110H?

I may be having a brain fluff moment but I don't really understand the Just in Jousting event?

E.g. if I've claimed Daja, can I then mention Sandry in my 110H? Yes, you may. However, the fic concentration still must be on the character/couple chosen, it can't be like ' the girl who wasn't Sandry said', the character/couple should still be the main focus. I may be having a brain fluff moment but I don't really understand the Just in Jousting event? Okay, so the idea of the Just In Jousting is basically, what are they up to now? It can be a future!fic from where they left off, or how they're finding life in the Peaceful Realms. Basically just a current update, maybe on how they're doing post current books. Interpret as you like!

Haha, no, I definitely don't plan to do that. It's more describing incidental actions, like "Sandry helped her up."

I have a bit of a clarification about 'Just In Justing'. I'm somewhat puzzled about what to make of "100 words plus on what your character/couple are up to now", considering Mattes's current disposition at the end of Mastiff. Do I get some leeway in this; so, for instance, can I AU this, or do I simply use a different point in time? :S

Seek an AU would be okay for you, or you can choose to write just prior to the ending - the aim for that event is just to have more recent fic than say childhood fic or pre books fic.

What are the rules regarding completing a Decathlon for a pairing, and then going on to complete a second, separate Decathlon for one of the characters in that pairing? I'm nearing the end of my writing for Yazmin/Vedris, but am realising that I would really love to write more challenges for Yazmin. Is this allowed, or would I have to pick a new character for a second Decathlon?

So long as you complete the Yazmin/Vedris first, and no one has claimed Yazmin as a character in the mean time, it's perfectly fine

Could I ask for a bit more guidance on what 'Fantasy Fencing' involves? I'm sort of lost as to what 'a fantasy theme' might mean >>

Post by Rachy on Apr 4, 2015 20:21:54 GMT 10
Clearly I should have been more descriptive >.< The fantasy theme is to focus on the magical elements - so things like the Gift, the Sight, the Voice, wild magic, shaman magic, mages, charms, Stormwings and other creatures from the Divine Realms etc - it can be something like being healed or seeing a magic at work or using their magic. Or basically we see a lot of magic in both universes - how do your characters react to it?

Sorry for the double-post but this is a question I was wondering about: must the couples be shipped? Because if this is the case, then the next time Decathlon's run, I'd like to suggest something that occurred to me: Maybe it would be a good idea to be a bit more permissive in a pair category? That way, we can have things like Frostpine & Daja, for example, allowing people to write about friendships and family bonds without having to add shippy elements in. This might open up more possibilities for fic, especially in the case of underage characters, too. (Because am I the only one who'd like to see more Tris & Glaki fic? Or maybe Taybur & Dunevon?) Just a thought

@seekeraftertruthi'm not Rachy, but I don't think the couples necessarily have to be romantically shipped as long as you show/focus on their relationship. So I assume something like Frostpine & Daja would be acceptable under the current rules.

Just a thought It's not really something I'd considered, but I say go for it, it's an excellent idea! With so many great platonic relationships, it would be a shame to not include them, and I think the only event that might cause some trouble is the 4x100 - and that could probably be worked around - is the other character jealous of not being able to be in all parts of their life or to be excluded, proud, approving, worried they'll lose them? Or you can do a Triathlon/Pentathlon and avoid that event. So yes, please, go for the platonic couples! And we will definitely keep this in mind for future Decathlons - if anyone else has any ideas or improvements, please share them!
