Title: What Happens in Vegas Scanra...
Rating: PG-13
For: Griff
Prompt: 5. Married in Vegas. (or Tyra. Or Carthak. Or... you get the idea)
Summary: The morning after a wedding, and Kel has to figure out where things stand.
Notes: Sorry it's later than intended; I wound up having to run emergency pick-ups for my roommate's girlfriend when she got sick and had to drive her around.
Kel loved her friends. Truly, she did. She just never expected to love this one in this way.
This was, of course, making an assumption that he felt the same way and didn't feel trapped by what had happened...
Oh, gods. As if Kel didn't have enough to worry about, now she wasterrified worried that he was feeling trapped and he would be noble and not tell her.
Kel let out a breath slowly, trying to let go of the ball of fear and worry that was gripping her chest. "Well. I suppose we should talk about this."
Next to her, Merric let out a breath of his own, his freckles stark against pale skin. "We should."
After searching for the words to say, Kel finally gave up and started with "I don't know how much of a dowry I have. Neither I nor my parents were expecting me to marry." Her fingers started to twist in the sheet, before she realized they were doing so and forced them to still.
Merric glared at her, anger that was out of place on his face. "Is that why you think I wanted this, Keladry? I don't care about any dowry, and I don't know what the law would be for this situation, even if I did."
"Why did you want... this, then, Merric?" Kel was keeping a tight rein on her emotions, not letting them show through the veneer of her face that she could feel cracking under the weight of her feelings.
Merric shoved a hand through his hair. "Because I love you, Kel." She blinked in surprise at him and his anger seemed to seep away. "I love you, all right? I liked you when we were pages and you were working so hard and I liked you when we were squires, even if you were fixated on Cleon and I liked you when we became knights and you were in charge of Haven. I know you think that I resented you getting the command, but the truth was, Kel, I knew you were the best for it and I was just happy that I wasn't going to be stationed away from you." He gave her a quirk of a smile. "I love you, Kel. That's why I married you."
Kel knew that people thought that when she was silent, she was being defiant. She wasn't. The truth was, when she was silent, as she often was, it was because she didn't have the foggiest notion what to say.
This was one of those moments. She didn't know what to say but she did, in fact, have an idea of what she should do, so she leaned over and kissed Merric soundly.
When she pulled away, she gave him a little smile. "I suppose now that we should just work out how to tell people that we already got married, and resign ourselves to the complaints we'll receive about denying our friends the chance to see us wed."
It turns out that what happens in Scanra does not necessarily stay in Scanra.
