Summary: There are other accomplishments in life besides her work as a Dog.
Bliss was not what I felt. It was not quite contentment, for I had enough fear deep in my bones to think of those early days and see what a hopeful looby I had been. It had been easier when I was younger, when Nilo was still in his strings, because Mama had still been around and I took pride in showing that I knew how to be a sister. And then with Tansy, she had a nursemaid that smiled and took Roland when he made a mess, and then I remember the Shadow Snake gang and fear worms deeper in my bones. Being a mother was something I considered far off, once my reputation as a top Dog was solid and I'd met the man and all those distant things. And then Farmer and I had wed and Gareth and it seemed as good as an idea as any to see what being a ma was all about. He'd been good to me, as patient and sweet as always, with his smile and tenderness, and he was everything I'd hoped with our little one. We had had a blissful and contented week of little sleep together, just us three and us three alone, all cosied in our house and watching our little girl meet our world.
Our first outing was to breakfast, and I could not have thought of a better way to tie my new life with my old. Our daughter was swaddled in blankets, thankfully asleep in Farmer's arms as we made our way through the Lower City to the Dove. Corus was a mix of noise-filled markets and quiet streets, and I greeted those we knew as we passed. It made my heart glad to see the Dove, and it was gladder still to see all those we loved waiting in the main room. There was quiet reunion and quieter cooing, and my daughter soon passed from Farmer's arms.
"She'll be a pretty one, no doubt." Ersken says softly, bouncing her gently in his arms.
"A fearsome one." Rosto laughs, and I give him a glare.
"She has Farmer's eyes, not mine." I reply, and smile as Goodwin manouvres her out of Ersken's arms. Clary shakes her head.
"She's all you."
"I can be fearsome." Farmer protests, and there is gentle laughter. I press a kiss to his cheek, and am thankful that few here know that is indeed the truth.
"Looby." I reply with affection, and he wraps an arm around me.
"Tom made you this for when your little lass is out of your bed." Goodwin says, and Tom presents us with a finely worked cradle. Tears prick my eyes at the detailed craftsmanship and time that's gone into it, and I work up a smile.
"I don't think I've seen finer work. Thank you, Tom."
"We're proud of you, Beka." Goodwin replies, and if her eyes are wet, I don't mention it.
"Thank you, Clary." I kiss her cheek and embrace her somewhat awkwardly, and leave her to coo with Tom over my daughter.
Rosto, Aniki, Kora, Ersken and Phelan sit together at the table with Lady Sabine, and she rises and embraces both Farmer and me.
"I will not have long to stay after the blessing." Sabine warns, and I nod.
"We are just grateful to have you here. In honesty, I had thought you could only be spared for the blessing."
"You have many friends who still wish you well, and some who were tempted to leave their own sister and sneak away to show you so." Sabine smiles, and I feel a tug in my heart for Prince Gareth. She goes to Clary and Tom, and I take her seat at the table, Farmer sitting next to me. There is a large pile of cloth in the middle of the table, and my friends wear patient smiles.
"It is from all of us in equal." Kora says, and I raise my eyebrows in bemusement. Rosto presents a bouquet of gillyflowers, all of them red.
"For your blessings."
"And these too." Aniki says, lying a pair of finely wrought bracelets on the flowers.
I turn to Kora, and she smiles her little smile and unfolds the cloth with deliberately infuriating care. It is a quilt, embroidered and stitched with small squares, clearly representing all who are important to us. Farmer runs a hand along the cloth, and points towards the largest square, of a cat with the resemblance to Pounce. His eyes glint with tiny fire opals instead, but I can tell that there is power in the cloth, and I do not miss the assessing nod Farmer gives Kora, or the smile she gives in reply.
"We fast discovered the difference between mending and embroidery." Phelan smiled wryly.
"Some of us discovered where our talents best lie." Ersken says firmly, and I smile. He had hated mending as much as I had.
"Your sisters are quite remarkable with needle and thread. We presented them with something quite -" Aniki paused, thinking.
"A shambles." Rosto said firmly, and everyone nods their agreement.
I run my own hand across the cloth, leaning back against Farmer, and feeling quite blessed to have my man and my friends in my life. Farmer's hand traces circles along my side, and I turn my face towards him. He gives me his smile and the kiss I wanted, slow and soft and sweet, yet still stirring a wave of love and heat in my soul. Sabine holds a now awake bundle in her arms, and I take her from her godmother, smiling down at her.
"Sleep well, sweetling?" Farmer asks affectionately, running his finger along her cheek. She wriggles and makes a sound back, and we both smile. I nestle into Farmer's arms, and their warmth surrounds me fully as I rock her back to sleep, surrounded by the man and people I loved.
