Insistent thudding on the door drew Daine's attention. "I'm coming, I'm coming," she shouted crossly. Really, people could give her a moment to respond.
She pulled open the door. A strange woman staggered tipsily into the room, awkwardly supported by Neal. He had the kind of stunned look on his face that one usually only saw on landed fish.
"It's about damn time," snapped the woman. "Skies above us, but you take your sweet time responding, girl."
Daine put her hands on her hips and glared. Neal, without so much as a by-your-leave, dumped the woman into the nearest chair. She slumped over sideways, holding herself vaguely upright only by her grip on the arms of the chair.
Neal wandered over to Daine and touched her sleeve, redirecting her attention. His mouth opened and closed several times, before he finally just flapped a hand at the woman and squeaked, “Look.”
Daine did: the woman was short and stocky, pale-skinned, with shaggy steel-gray hair and deep brown eyes. Her face was what could charitably be called horsy, and as the woman grimaced at her, Daine could see she sported impressively strong teeth.
"Stop staring, girl, and fix this.”
That was the last straw. "I don't even know who you are, Miss," Daine retorted tartly.
Neal, babbling something about side effects and slow magic and Numair, skittered further into Daine's rooms. Skysong, coming to see what all the fuss was, whistled at him as he passed. The dragon sat back on her haunches and surveyed the woman for a moment, then babbled something dragonish at her and climbed onto her lap, cooing.
Daine and the stranger both stared. "Nothing unsettles her, does it," the woman remarked.
Neal bustled back into the room, towing Numair. Numair, gifted with the ability to pull sense from random babble, patted Neal on the shoulders and said, "Alright, then, let me take a look. Thank you for getting me."
The woman, Daine noticed, was eyeing Numair balefully. She turned to glare at Neal. "You had to drag the stork-man into this?" she snapped.
"If I had a copper for every magical accident I've been privy to, I'd have bankrupted several nations," Numair told her, sounding far too amused. "Neal said you said it was a side-effect from Daine's blood?"
The woman returned to glaring at Numair. "Can you think of a better explanation?"
An icy surety settled into Daine's stomach. It was crazy, but... "Cloud?" she asked tentatively.
The woman glared. "It took you that long to recognize me?"
"You're usually a pony," Neal said, managing his first coherent sentence since he showed up on Daine's doorstep.
"Why are you a human?" Daine asked.
"Why do you think I'm here?" Cloud snapped back. "I don't know!"
"Well," Numair said cheerfully, cutting off the looming argument. "I suppose we just need to monitor other animals Daine has worked with, to see whether something's happened with them. Does anybody know where Brokefang is?"
