Title: Inari
Rating: G
Warnings: N/A
Summary: Kel tries to put her grumpy baby boy to sleep.
Notes: I just love babies. Even when they fuss. <3 A lot of my baby stuff is inspired by my neice and nephew. This is kind of unpolished, but bear with me. I decided to write it out last night because my muse was poking me in a very distracting way. Enjoy
Incessant wailing rang throughout the halls of Masbolle's castle. Kel was sure that the only reason why nobody had come in to gripe was because of how disrespectful it would've been. She walked around her infant son's nursery, gently bouncing him in her arms. All she wanted was sleep, any amount of it at this point.
“Come now, Inari.” She attempted to soothe him. “Hush, it's okay.” She had already sung all the lullabies she knew, including the Yamani ones that her two year old daughter, Ilena, had favored at that age. Of course, Ilena had been an incredibly easy baby compared to most. So much so that Neal called her “a rarity among babykind”. She had regular habits, slept on time and throughout the night and hardly ever cried. Her son, on the other hand, was already proving to be drastically different than his sister at only a few months old. This night alone she had already changed his diaper four times, fed him twice and she'd been trying to get him to sleep for a solid hour or so by now.
Kel adjusted her in his arms so that his head was over her shoulder. “There, there. Is that better?” It wasn't. Inari wailed louder. He fought against the quilt wrapped around him like a cocoon as Kel tried to get him more comfortable. “What's wrong?” She sighed, exasperated. “I changed you, fed you, sang to you. What is it that's upsetting you?”
“You haven't had an wink of sleep yet, have you?” Leaning against the door frame, her husband smiled sympathetically.
Kel glanced a him, distracted. “I thought I told you to get some sleep.”
Dom approached her, wrapped in a robe to keep some warmth. “Come on, mama. You know I'm not good at listening.” He held out his arms. “Here, why don’t you give him to me?”
“I can handle it. Really.” She protested softly. “Go back to bed. You need sleep.”
“So do you. Or has our son turned you into a nocturnal creature?” He joked. She cracked a smile. “Come on, love. Hand him over.”
Reluctantly, Kel handed over her noisy bundle. Dom held him, softly bouncing him the same way Kel had been. She watched them both, her smile growing wider. The boy would certainly look like his father. Her mother-in-law had been gushing non-stop over him, frequently mentioning how Inari looked just like his father when he was a baby. His eyes, however, were Kel's in almost every way. Initially, she had been surprised to find that he inherited her eye color. Ilena had Kel's lashes, but Dom's blue eyes. Both of their children shared the same dark hair.
Suddenly, Dom stopped bouncing him. Slowly, he unwrapped the boy from his cocoon, allowing his arms freedom. Kel was astonished as their son finally quieted down. Within a few minutes, he was drifting asleep. Dom brought him over to his crib and laid him in it gently, covering him lightly with the blanket. Even in slumber the boy would fuss. He shuffled his feet and kicked off the quilt.
The couple blinked at their son. Dom finally moved the quilt to the far end of the crib away from Inari's head. He looked up at Kel. “I don't think he likes the blanket.”
Kel frowned. “But he's going to get cold.” She went over next to Dom and placed the quilt back over Inari until it was just at his waist. As if giving her a silent warning, he opened up bleary eyes, made something that sounded like it was supposed to be a grunt and kicked it off again.
“He doesn't want it, love.”
Kel sighed. “We can't let him sleep like that. He'll get sick. It's too cold for him to sleep without a blanket.”
Dom left the crib for a moment, then came back. He had another, lighter blanket in his hands. “Here, let's try this one instead.” He laid it over Inari. Inari opened his eyes to take a peek at whatever it was that was disturbing him again. Kel would later wonder if she only imagined it, but she swore she saw him sigh, as if resigning, before going back to sleep.
“So, it's just that one.” Dom took out the quilt from the crib.
“But that's the one Neal got him.” She said quietly. They both stood there over their son, watching him a he slept.
Dom leaned over slightly, rubbing her back. “Didn't you say that westerners believe in reincarnation?”
“Some of them. It's not really popular in the islands, but some of the more western countries do. It depends on what we're talking about.” She frowned, confused. “Why do you ask?”
“It's just...” Dom began as he slowly led Kel out of the nursery. “Are you sure you didn't get any vibes about Peachblossom when you were pregnant? See his spirit? Maybe dreamt about him?”
“Well, of course I've thought about him, but nothing out of the ordinary.” She thought about it. “If I did then I don't remember. Why?”
“I'm just thinking that Neal might have a point about Peachblossom being too stubborn to leave you. I mean, he did bite Neal after all.” Dom closed the door after him, looking back at Inari one more time.
“He was teething.” She slapped him on his chest lightly.
“He still does it though.”
“He's still teething.”
“But he only bites Neal.”
“You really think that our son is the reincarnation of Peachblossom?” She eyed him. “Is that what your saying?”
Dom shrugged, wrapping an arm around Kel's shoulders. “I'm tired. Your tired. I don't completely know what I'm saying. What I do know is that boy--” He gestured back to the room with his thumb. “--is prejudiced against everything Neal.”
