Title: Journey
Rating: G
Prompt: Journey (#27)
Theme: Understated Genius
Series: Instrumental
Summary: The king finds a man to build his furniture.
Notes: Inspired by the song "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra.
"Hello, sir," the king said to an astonished man in the doorway. "I've come to draw up the plans for the furniture with you - all's well, yes?"
"Your Highness, I… of course, would you like to see what I've written so far?" He stepped aside to admit the king, bowing as he did so.
The house was small and plain, with one large tree making up the entire garden, but which the king appraised as he walked in. The leaves blew slightly in the wind, bringing with them the scent of lemon. His sure, sudden footstep made the flowerpot on the window sill shiver; the dog on the front mat scurried away from his grandeur.
The simple wooden chair in the kitchen was enough to hold the slim carpenter, but the king's weight would certainly break it. At the man's apologetic glance, the king waved him off.
"I'll stand, don't worry. I imagine the chairs I will use in the future will bear my bulk. Shall we start with the main table?"
The carpenter nodded obligingly and lay a spreadsheet covered with scribblings and diagrams before the king. As the worker muttered in his low voice, pointing and gesturing, the king's eyebrows continued to raise. "Well, you've definitely thought this through, sir."
The man smiled abashedly. "Is this adequate, Your Highness?"
"More than adequate," the king said, "In fact, I'm floored." He laughed. "No jest was intended there." The king heard a soft laugh in response.
The king's eyes swept over the plan once more. The table was designed ahead of its time, the king noted; its aerodynamic precision was infallible. It was simple with elegant embellishments and a pleasing presentation. "Yes, I would have to say you're a genius," the king proclaimed, making his companion start.
"Thank you kindly, Majesty," was the murmured answer and half bow.
At that moment a clatter was heard from the staircase, causing them to turn around.
"Oh, hello," a voice as gentle as her father's whispered.
"Maude…" the carpenter began, "This is…"
But the king forgot about rank as he watched her. Her bright blue apron, tied charmingly with a bow, brought out her lovely eyes. Her nose was perfectly formed, complementing the demure curve of her lips that turned up in a grin.
