Title: Be Merry, Mindelan
Summary: Dom gets drunk during the Midwinter holiday and Kel decides he needs a babysitter before he makes trouble.
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: This is one Deviantart as well. This is the second installment of my Mindelan series. I wrote this in 2011. Are there things in here that I'd tweak? Yes, but I wrote this a couple years ago and I'm working on newer installments right now. I'd really love to hear what you guys think! Especially about their character portrayal. Anything constructive on that is encouraged. Feedback and critique is appreciated! <3

"Keeeel, have a drink!" Domitan of Masbolle slurred loudly. The Third Company sergeant of the King's Own swung an arm around Keladry of Mindelan. Kel sighed and shook her head. She didn't mind going to Corus' local inns with Dom and the men of the Own, but Dom just got plain silly when he had too much to liquor in him. His speech got sloppy, hair tousled every which way and his cheeks pinker than the finest flowers in spring. Not to mention he got rather playful. Dom was always the type to flirt here and there, but after having too much to drink he got especially flirty.
Kel removed his arm and patted him on the shoulder -- her heart did a little flutter -- then looked at his full cup. "I think you've had too much to drink."
Throwing his hands up into the air spilled some liquor out of his cup. "Nonsense!" He brought his free hand down to tickle Kel's chin, "You need to relax, dove."
"No." She swatted his hand away. "You need to sit down before you make trouble."
Kel looked up at Dom sternly. Dom was one of the few men she didn't have to look her nose down at. He was about four inches taller than she was, dark hair with blue eyes and very broad shoulders. His mouth was long and made for smiling with bright, warm eyes for company. All together Dom was a very handsome young man.
On the other hand, Kel had never considered herself pretty. She stood tall at five foot ten inches with broad shoulders. She usually kept her straight, mouse brown hair cut just below her earlobes. Her long lashes framed a pair of dreamer's hazel eyes over a delicate nose and full, stern lips.
"Midwinter is a time to be merry! Time to have some fun! Drinks, warm fires…" He brought their noses closer together and breathed "…pretty women."
Kel thought she felt her heart stop. She hated the way he could still do that after all those years. Her feet shuffled backwards and away from him. He didn't need to see how red she knew her face was.
Her hand shot out and plucked the cup from his hand. She told him firmly, "No more drinks."
"But--"
"No, Dom."
Defeated, he pouted like a sullen child. "Fine."
As he walked away in search of other entertainment someone else came up beside her. "Taking care of the children, mother?"
"He can't think straight." Kel told Neal, "Somebody has to watch him."
"And of course you're more than willing to foster him." Nealan of Queenscove, her best friend, shook his head at his cousin. "Poor lad. He's going to be sick to his stomach in the morning."
Kel sighed. She remembered the few times she had picked up a drink. The vicious headaches, coupled with the loose, careless feelings that came over her whenever she consumed even a little helped her decide not to make it a habit. "I'm sure he will."
Neal steered Kel away to a table. "Come on. It's probably a lot easier to keep an eye on naughty lads when your not starving."
It wasn't until her food was placed in front of her that Kel realized how hungry she was. She hadn't eaten all day and not once did it occur to her. Neal, too, apparently as she watched him wolf down his food as politely as possible. Suddenly, a tall, graying man Kel recognized as the innkeeper walked over to their table.
The innkeeper's voice was tight with obvious frustration. "Lady Keladry is it?"
Kel looked up at the man. "Yes?"
"My lady…" The innkeeper cleared his throat. "The young man you were conversing with earlier…the blue eyes…"
Kel pushed her plate away and resisted the urge to sigh. Of course he did something. She told herself, now I probably need to clean it up.
"He's begun to disturb people, my lady." The innkeeper went on. "Passed out in the middle of the floor he is."
Kel considered bringing Owen with her when Dom woke up. Perhaps he'd learn his lesson if she had Owen make as much noise as possible so his foreseeable throbbing headache might throb even more. She shook her head. A small part of her rationalized that would be unnecessary.
Neal chuckled wickedly at the site. "Well, what do you know? He's not on his face this time."
The sergeant sat on the floor, mercifully leaned up against the wall for support. If she hadn't known better, Kel would have thought he was asleep.
"Come on. You get that side and I've got this one." Kel got on Dom's left side to hoist him up. Frankly, she had half a mind to leave him there.
"Can't we dump him in Peachblossom's stall?"
Kel frowned. "No. That would irritate Peachblossom."
She swore she heard him mumble something about the monster deserving it. Neal had always been Peachblossom's favorite target. Tobe, her servant she bought a few years back from an abusive owner, revealed that the very large, temperamental horse really just liked the way Neal squeaked.
She bade the men of the Own a good night on their way out and told him, "It's not his fault you squeak the way you do."
"Yes it is. Have you ever been bitten by the beast?" He demanded.
"He's stepped on me."
Neal winced and finally shut his mouth.
Kel was glad it was cold and snowy out. Dom was making her heartbeat quicken and if it weren't for the nippy air she might have been sweating.
The three of them reached Dom's sleeping quarters and promptly found his chambers. They set him down on an open chair in the room and heaved a sigh. Dom was a heavy man. To drag him anywhere was always a task.
"Should we stay with him?" She asked.
"Probably." Neal walked over to the desk, "I'd hate to find that he'd choked on his own vomit."
Kel found another open chair on the other side of the room and settled herself down in it. She didn't feel right about snooping around in Dom's room. Especially when this had been the first time she'd been in it. He might not appreciate it when he woke up.
Time passed slowly, Kel found herself dozing off when Dom stirred in his chair. He woke up, bleary-eyed and looking a little sick.
"Mithros mercy…" He winced. She figured it was the headache coming on. "…I did it again, didn't I?"
Neal drawled on as he usually did. "No. We flogged you and dragged you all the way here to be our prisoner."
Dom chuckled and winced again. "Thanks for the sarcasm. I'll tuck it away and cherish it forever."
Kel, watching them both from the other side of the room, raised her brows and almost shook her head. She fought off a yawn with little success and finally stood up. All she wanted right now was her bed and some peace. As she stretched herself out, Neal clapped his cousin on the shoulder, bade him and Kel a good night and strolled out the door.
"You might want to see a healer if you get too sick." She moved to follow Neal, "They can probably help."
Dom grinned wearily. "No, thanks all the same. It's easier just to sleep it off or stay up all night throwing it up if I must. Drinks do that to a man when he's not careful." Kel raised her brows at him. "You should join me sometime. The drink, I mean. It doesn't have to be liquor. It could be cider."
Kel sighed. "Dom, how many times have I told you to spend time with real females?"
"Kel, if you haven't noticed you're a very real female. Believe me. I've ridden with you long enough to notice."
The look she gave him made him chuckle nervously and hunch his shoulders in defense. He added, "It's the truth."
He was beginning to confuse her. Was he being serious? The way he was asking her was so casual she wasn't sure if he really meant it or not. Joking Dom she was used to. Serious Dom too. But there was always that crystal clear distinction in his voice and his face that told her what he meant. Not this time. He was virtually unreadable.
"I mean it, Kel." He told her as if he'd read her mind. "A drink wouldn't kill you would it?"
"Maybe. It happens."
He made a face. "Come now, don't be so literal. Just one drink Kel. Before one of us has to ride out again. "
She opened her mouth to protest, but closed it again. That was true. Then she'd wish she'd gone when he offered.
"Alright, but one drink." She warned him. "We don't need any more accidents."
"Yes, mother. I'll be a good lad like you told me to." He teased.
If she hadn't been so tired she would have swung at him. "Well, I'm off to bed. Good night."
Dom nodded . He winked at her as she turned to walk away. "Good night, Lady Kel."
All the way back to her chambers Kel wondered something. Was Dom being serious? He said he was and she believed him, but it was still kind of strange after all those years. She finally decided to stop thinking about it as soon as her head hit the pillow.
