Title: Story Time at the Swoop
Rating: PG
Word Count: 560
Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan
Round/Fight: 3A
Summary: Aunt ‘Lanna tells the best stories, even if Jon disagrees.
Giggles met Jon’s ears as he pushed open the door to the Royal Suite. Stepping into the warm glow of the room, he was greeted by the sight of children bouncing with excitement as they clambered over his Champion. Alanna, seated on the floor and leaning back against the couch, grinned up at him.
“And so, because of the great beauty of the princess, locked away in the tower, a valiant knight set out to rescue her and bring her back to her kingdom.”
Apparently, Jon was interrupting story time, which explained why none of his own brood were scrambling to greet him (he absolutely wasn’t put out by the lack of attention…)
“The princess is Mama, right?” Little Kally asked, tugging at Alanna’s sleeve. She grinned and tousled the girl’s hair affectionately.
“Of course, sweetie. Your mama was the prettiest princess in the world.”
Three year olds Thom and Liam shoved closer, crowing, “More, more!”
Jon smiled and interjected, drawing the children’s attention to him for the first time. “Well, of course, the knight had to be daring, and brave, and handsome—“
“—No, Papa!” Kally interrupted him, “You’re not the knight, Aunt ‘Lanna is!”
Jon’s jaw dropped, but Liam and Thom were nodding in solemn agreement, and Alanna smirked over their heads.
“It’s ok, Papa,” Roald told him, “I like you,” but Jon wasn’t buying his eldest’s diplomatic reassurance. It was hard to be convincing at the age of six when one was cuddled up in Alanna’s lap. Traitor.
“You can wait your turn and be in the next story,” Alanna informed Jon, eyes dancing. “But you can’t interrupt story time anymore. There’s a princess to be rescued, you know.”
“Fine,” Jon replied, “But shove over so I can join you.”
Once the children were settled, Kally and Liam taking spots cuddled against Jon, Alanna continued the story, weaving a tale of adventure and glory as a certain valiant, red-headed knight braved fearsome creatures to rescue the Princess.
“And then, the knight broke the lock on the tower and found the Princess waiting inside. ‘It’s about time,’ the princess said, drawing her sword, ‘I’ve been waiting for someone to let me out! I’ve been wanting to go on adventures forever!’”
The children giggled at this. “Did they go have adventures, Aunt ‘Lanna?” Roald asked, craning his head around to see her face.
Alanna looked at him, and stated seriously, “Well, of course! The Knight and the Princess traveled across the world together and rescued many people and found treasure and then they lived happily ever after.”
Kally sighed happily and hugged Jon. “I liked that story, Papa,” she confided in him.
Next to Alanna, Thom bounced impatiently. “More stories!”
Alanna laughed, hugging her son gently. “Alright, alright, I did promise you another one, didn’t I?”
The children shrieked with glee, and Jon grunted as Kally and Liam joined Thom, bouncing in excitement. “Yes, yes!”
“This time I get to be in the story,” Jon looked pointedly at Alanna, who shrugged.
“Sure.” She shifted, briefly, transferring Roald to the other side of her lap as she did so. “Alright, so: once upon a time, there was a hideous monster with blue eyes—“
Four children positively shrieked with laughter.
“Hey!”
