Title: Wax Doll Paradox III
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 369
Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan
Round/Fight: 3A
Summary: She finds out, too late.
Warnings: Multiple character deaths.
AN: Another Paradox prompt, #3; "Alanna does and does not finds the Wax Dolls"
The first letter that reaches Alanna after she receives her knighthood comes from Jonathan.
Alan, it reads, The King has exiled Roger to Conte lands. He is to be under magical guard at all times. Duke Baird has been able to negate some of the damage to the Queen’s health. Have you found your adventure yet?
Alanna’s gut clenches and heaves, the horror of finding the likeness of the Queen in the fountain in Roger’s workrooms unsettling her again. Finding it, she had fled the Duke’s rooms and brought the doll straight to Jonathan. His words, though, bring her little peace.
The second letter leaves her head ringing.
Alan, Gary’s being made Duke officially in a week. His father passed away from a heart attack yesterday. Gary wants to know if you’ll be home in time. I do, too. Will you?”
She doesn’t hear from Corus for months, after that. She’s in another country when the third letter catches up, and she knows something’s wrong when she sees how shaky Jon’s handwriting is.
Alan, she reads as her heart begins to pound, Barony Olau needs you to return. You’ve— and she pauses as her vision blurs, scrubbing at her eyes before continuing to read, —you’ve been named as Sir Myles’ heir. The healers say his liver failed, and he drank himself to death. They need you now. I need you too—will you come home?
There is something very, very wrong, and Alanna can’t deny it anymore. She turns Moonlight back towards Tortall.
A messenger from Thom reaches her as the city begins to come into view, the rider bearing it slumped over his mount’s neck, both of them sweaty and exhausted.
Run. she hears Thom’s voice.
She doesn’t make it far. Tales will tell that Sir Alan, later found to be the last lady knight in the history of Tortall, passed away in Port Legann the same day that the uncrowned King Jonathan died, both of asphyxiation inside of locked rooms.
The King is dead, long live the King.
