Title: Rescue
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 401
Pairing: Buri/Raoul
Round/Fight: 2B
Summary: Raoul waits.
Raoul is the first one to reach her. She lies on the ground, eyes closed, covered in mud and dark red stains that he would rather not think about. He silently prays to the Gods that they didn't come from her.
He was the first to hear the messenger. A rider group attacked out on the marches, outnumbered four to one. He was part of the rescue team. The words "back up" switched in his head to "clean up". All the men expected to find were dead riders. For the most part, they were right.
Raoul crouches down beside Buri, holds one of her cold hands against his cheek, his lips. Please... He reaches down, presses fingers to the side of her neck. There- it's faint, but there's no doubt. Her pulse beats unevenly beneath his hand, but it's there. He scoops her into his arms, lifts her onto the back of his horse and rides, rides, rides. He doesn't stop until he reaches the nearest town. He charges down the street, and demands to know where the Healer lives. A man guides him to a house with a green roof, and Raoul climbs from his horse, and hammers on the door until it opens.
He stays with her whilst the Healer looks over Buri, assessing her injuries. It's announced that she'll live, but he still doesn't move. He waits four whole hours for any sign of life. Masbolle locates him at some point, informs him that they found only two more survivors. They've burned the dead. The company plans to head back to Corus this afternoon. Raoul nods, and smiles quickly, but his attention is firmly fixed on the girl lying on the bed.
He's the first thing Buri sees when she wakes up. He grins broadly, and pulls her into his arms. Be careful, she says, her ribs still hurt where they broke. He loosens the bear hug ever so slightly, but he isn't letting go of her. Not yet. They leave for home the next day, with the other riders who were injured. He walks into the palace with an arm around her shoulders. He's holding her up, he says. She's still shaky, and needs the support. Their friends pretend not to see when he kisses her forehead. But later, when they're alone, they wonder how long it will take for Buri and Raoul to realise what they have.
