Title: Family Ties
Rating: G
Word Count: 228
Pairing: Buri/Raoul
Round/Fight: 2B
Summary: After Raoul’s Gift spontaneously reveals itself, there are a few things that need to be dealt with.
A/N: Part of my Adjustments series, in which Raoul is a late-bloomer and comes into his Gift later in life than most.
“Oh gods,” Raoul says, putting his face in his hands. “I have to tell my family, don’t I?”
He misses the look that Duke Baird and the king exchange, but Buri doesn’t, and she can’t help but grin. “It can’t be that bad. Just write a letter.”
“If I tell my great-aunt that I suddenly have the Gift in a letter, do you really expect that to go well?”
“It will be a short while before you can return to work with the Own,” Baird says, glancing at Jonathan. “I want to keep you under observation, in case anything…strange should arise.”
Raoul’s head shoots up; his expression is exasperated. “Strange? You mean like developing the Gift practically overnight?”
“What Baird means,” says Jonathan with a smirk, “is that you will have time for a little trip.”
“You have got to be joking.”
When he turns to Buri, she shakes her head, still grinning. “You’re on your own.”
“You don’t want to meet my family? I’m hurt.”
“I have a hard enough time dealing with one Goldenlake,” she tells him, “and if what you’ve told me is true, you’re the weakest of the lot. You’re definitely on your own.”
The king and the duke file out of the room, Buri on their heels. Before she closes the door behind her, she hears Raoul call out, “I’m writing a letter!”
