"Hey Dad," yelled a voice over the boil of a pot. "Can I please go to Tortall University?"
Currently Neal was sitting in the kitchen with Yuki, oblivious to his daughter's shouts. They were sipping their nightly green tea from wide, glazed Yamani mugs they got each other when they were married. According to Neal, it was bliss. Unfortunately, Yuki heard her, and almost coughed her tea out.
"Mariko," she called in her sternest voice. "Come here, please."
"What did she do now?" Neal wondered, a bit worried at his wife's expense.
Yuki glanced at him and rolled her eyes. "This is a matter you should discuss with her. I'm going downstairs to do the ironing."
Mariko ran into the kitchen at that moment, huffing and puffing. A grin spread slowly over he face. "Mom, I think you're gonna wanna stay for this."
"Stay for what?" Dads always get to this stage, he thought resignedly. It was probably about sex or something.
"I'd like to go to Tortall University; Mother, Father."
Neal's mouth opened in what looked like slow motion. "I thought you were going to ask about - ah - I need refuge, Yuki. Can I do the ironing with you?"
"No," she replied, resisting the urge to kiss him on the cheek. But then her daughter would try to run for refuge, and they needed to focus on the matter.
Mariko broke in. "Keladry's gone, and Fenella, and - "
"I…. personally don't see a problem with you going," Neal said softly. "As long as you don't cause a riot. I mean, girls are openly accepted now, but don't clear the stage to make room for you."
Mariko smiled. "I love your drama puns, Dad," she said. "They never fail to cheer me up."
Neal smiled back in response but looked slightly troubled. "It was meant to be serious."
"Oh. Well mom, Dad basically said yes, so can I go?"
"Goodness, he's already lecturing you on how to behave," Yuki said, half to herself. "We'll worry about that in a year or so, Mariko. In the meantime, your father and I would like to finish our tea in peace."
"Yeah," Neal interjected. "And then I have another date with your mother in the laundry room."
