Word Count: 900 words
Pairing: Beka/Rosto
Round/Fight: 1/C
Summary: Beka gets some interesting new neighbours across the hall. Modern AU.
Rosto Piper moves into the vacant apartment across the hall on a rainy Wednesday morning. I’m drinking a cup of tea when there is a loud thump to the door, and then loud cursing. Ersken rolls off the couch and gives me a quizzical look, and I walk to the door and open it cautiously. There is a long, thin buffet blocking the doorway across, doors hanging open and a drawer at my feet, and a blonde man wedged around the buffet in the doorway opposite, muttering curses to echoing laughter in the apartment. I look at my own door and scowl at the dark scratch across the frame, reaching out to buffer it with my sleeve. It does not budge.
“Do you want some help?” Ersken calls out from behind me, and I jab my elbow back at him. The blonde man turns and looks across at us. Eyebrows raised and gaze assessing, he looks at Erksen first and then turns his gaze to me, sleek and inappropriately slow. My face burns in pure irritation, and I return his gaze with a sharp glare of my own. He is handsome enough, blonde and gray eyed, tall and sharp featured, but his hair is too long for my taste, straight and pushed behind his ears without the redemption of Ersken’s curls.
“Wouldn’t mind. Smarty in here thought it’d be fine to bring her great aunt’s heirloom buffet to a titchy apartment and continued on thinking it when we tried squeezing it in the elevator. Luckily it just fit before we had to carry it up three flights of stairs.”
“It was only an op shop bargain, Rosto, don’t be ridiculous. And we fit fine in that lift, Kora just had to wait with the boxes. If you’d squished up more we would’ve made it, and even wouldn’t have woken our poor new neighbours up when you hit their door if we’d had the extra hand.” The woman in the apartment walked to the door, and perched herself on the buffet, sliding herself along and out in the hall. “I’m Aniki, and this is Rosto, and we’ve taken up the lease with Kora. She’ll be up in a sec.”
“Ersken, and this is Beka.” Ersken smiles, and I feel the familiar twining around my feet of fur, and my cat jumps onto the buffet, prowling along it. “And Beka’s cat, Pounce.”
“We’re allowed pets?” Aniki asks with a grin, her hand outstretched. Pounce is a sucker for back rubs, and Aniki seems all set to be his latest provider.
“We can get a fish.” Rosto says, watching Pounce warily. He is making his contented purr, and Aniki seems to be at the ‘pinching cheeks’ stage of adoration.
“No fish. Kitty.”
“Kitty?” A new voice asks, poking her head from behind a large stack of boxes. Ersken reaches out and takes one, and she flashes him a smile in thanks, causing him to blush. She spots Pounce, and her face lights up further. “Aren’t you a handsome little fellow?”
“This is Kora.” Rosto says dryly. “Kora, our new neighbours, Ersken and Beka. And Beka’s cat Pounce.”
“We live across the hall.” Ersken chimes in.
“We work together. Friends from school.” I add, before Ersken digs himself another hole with another girl by not specifying the platonic aspect of our relationship. “Did you need any more help with any of your things?”
They share a glance. “We’re not silly enough to say no.” Aniki smiles brightly, and I smile back hesitantly, bending down and picking up the drawer from the floor.
“Welcome to the building!” I offer lamely, and hold out the drawer. Rosto takes it from my hand, purposefully brushing our fingers, and he smirks when a shock passes from my hand to his. I glare at the carpet and don’t apologize.
“So I guess the two of you can recommend all sorts of nice places round here, then?” Rosto asks as Ersken slides over the other side of the buffet. “Good places for drinks, or meals, or cozy romantic little places?” I watch as he begins the slow push/pull with Ersken of pushing the buffet into the apartment, and stop myself from admiring the shape of his thighs in his jeans. It’s easier once I noticed the excess of bicep flexing, and roll my eyes. His mission appears to be either to infuriate or fluster me, and both are far easier to do than they should be.
“He’s like this with all the pretty girls.” Aniki says loudly, kicking him lightly.
“Aniki means he’s actually insufferable. You’ll get used to him after a while.” Kora said, lifting Pounce and giving him a rub under the chin. Rosto turns and flashes a slow, handsome smile, and the girls laugh. I smile. Perhaps having new neighbours will make life that bit more exciting. They seem like a fun bunch, and I can see me and Ersken becoming friends with them. Even if Rosto moves from polite flirting to obnoxious flirting, it’ll be nice. A bit of fun with a handsome guy, nothing serious or involved, just fun between friends. If he was actually interested, that is. He gives me a wink and I sigh dramatically.
“I guess I’ll have to. Might be a bit of a struggle though.” Rosto huffs in reply, and raises his eyebrows.
“Don’t worry, love. I’m more than worth the trouble.”
