Title: On his own Rating: G Word Count: 232 Pairing: Rebekah Cooper/Rosto the Piper Round/Fight: 1C Summary: Rosto thinks about Beka when he's on his own in the Dancing Dove
***
Rosto had supervised the building of the Dancing Dove with care and a keen attention to detail. Everything was just the way he liked it. And if it wasn't - well, he let his displeasure be known and the workman hurried to fix everything until it was just so.
He was so obsessed with overseeing the work and so entranced with the idea of the completed product that he moved in before it was properly finished. He loved walking (barefoot, and carefully, of course) on the new wood floors. He savoured the peace and quiet after a long, hard day (and night) as the Rogue.
But in the early hours of the morning, when the whole city was finally settled for the night and there was nothing to be seen on the streets but the light of the moon - those were the hours he sat at his window, staring pensively at the building across the street.
He didn't miss her, precisely. He knew nothing would ever work at between them - nothing serious, at any rate. He didn't have to miss their (admittedly rather one sided) flirtation, because he still saw her every day. But he did miss knowing she was nearby, sleeping just upstairs. He missed the idea of her and him and them. It was harder to dream when they were separated by the street (and everything it represented).

I love the details you included, like barefoot, and carefully, of course, and your pining Rosto. The street as a metaphor for the gap between them is wonderful as well.

Rosto, don't worry. You and she totally have a tumble at some point in time and create wee-Cooperites and the family line of being respectably rapscallion continues forever and ever and ever.

The sense of longing this fic has is a little bit magical, like everything that happens so very late at night-- it's beautifully written!
