Title: Late night worries Rating: PG Word Count: 205 Pairing: Kel/Lalasa Round/Fight: 1/B Summary: Sometimes, Lalasa thinks too much.
She has seen all of those boys. Daring and darling and tall, all of them. She has heard all the jokes. Even now, Cleon has been heard to whisper nostalgically of his love of tall women. Domitan does not joke—they bruised each other’s hearts well and long, Kel and that young man—but they had made a striking couple. Nealan—first, and tallest, and (if Lalasa had to choose) best.
In the sort of musing that can only strike sensible people when they have too many other things to do, Lalasa considers all of the reasons why it is foolish to love her former mistress, her strongest friend. There are the big, dark sorts of worry—words like power and proper and the growing, hard sense that Keladry’s king, Keladry’s city, is never going to be her own. All of these toy with her, laugh at the Lalasa Isran who still thinks that the Commander of New Hope has everything she needs except a home, or that her mouth might just be perfect. And yet, the worry that stings the most has nothing to do with any of these serious, important things.
Keladry would never want her. How could she? Lalasa isn't tall enough.

Oh, Kit. Have I told you how happy I am that you are writing this pairing? This is so gracefully done. There are the big, dark sorts of worry—words like power and proper and the growing, hard sense that Keladry’s king, Keladry’s city, is never going to be her own. I love the implications and the baggage that this sentence brings with it - all of the echoes of pain and darkness that Lalasa has had to cope with after she was attacked. All of the problems with the imbalance of power that this relationship could bring about. Keladry would never want her. How could she? Lalasa isn't tall enough. But then this. It's so wonderfully self-deprecating, funny, and at the same time has a darker air to it - it's entirely possible that she could be referring to more than just height as well. *exalts*

I'm not too into Kel/Lalasa, but this piece of writing is beautiful. Like, gorgeous.

... the sheer reasonable absurdity of the last line just did it for me. It's ridiculous, vulnerable, and entirely possible, all at the same time.

I love the glimpse you give us, through Lalasa's eyes, of Kel's previous loves, and how Lalasa sees them. For whatever reason, it fleshes her out more as an individual, in my opinion, and I loved this little look that we didn't get in canon. It's wonderful and three dimensional and very realistic.
