Title: Casualty Rating: PG Word Count: 188 Pairing: Crane/Lark/Rosethorn Round/Fight: 1B Summary: Set during Battle Magic. Lark assumes the worst. Prompt: hauntings
Lark’s face, when she raises her head, reveals an unravelling that he is not equipped to deal with. From the doorway he takes everything in—the loom; her bare legs beneath her nightgown; the undyed material spread across her lap where she’s sitting, round-shouldered, on the floor—and it is the tears staining her cheeks that gives him pause, at the last. He does not know how to offer comfort. Or perhaps a part of him recognises that it would bring no relief. The sound of her sobbing inhalation finds him kneeling beside her, however, and when she leans against him, fingers clinging, the wetness soaks through the shoulder of his shirt. “I didn’t finish it in time,” she whispers, choking on her grief. “I didn’t finish it in time.” He lets her cry, turning his eyes from the unfinished garment that is caught between them. His throat feels tight. He wants to tell her that declarations of love and protective spells are no shield against war, but that would be cruel, and Lark does not need to be told. Which is perhaps the cruellest thing of all.

He does not know how to offer comfort. Or perhaps a part of him recognises that it would bring no relief. This is so utterly Crane. Lark thinking, of all things, that she didn't finish it in time breaks my heart. You have such a subtle contrast between Lark wanting to give a gift (to Rosethorn) and not managing it, and Crane seeing that offering something (to Lark) would be only a gesture under the circumstances. I'm sure I'm reading too much into this, but oh well. There are some beautifully crafted sentences in here.

Crane is so logical and awkward here, but it's really in character--I think he's hard to portray sometimes, but this was great!
