Title: Protector
Rating: G
Word Count: 342
Pairing: Kel/Lalasa
Round/Fight: 1/B
Summary: Gower has a plan for Lalasa.
---
She had never meant to complain, but Gower made a habit of checking up on her and noticed a bruise half-hidden by her sleeve. She felt ashamed – it was enough that he had found her a job in the palace, he didn't have to be her protector, too.
Gower looked troubled, but he also knew there was little he could do. He worried for his young niece, but he couldn't be everywhere and protect her from all dangers. It was the fate of her position that she was sometimes alone with the wrong people, and there was no one to look out for a mere palace maid. Perhaps, though, if she could be in someone's service. An idea struck Gower, and he broached it to Lalasa.
“Lady Keladry returns to the palace in a week. She has no personal servant, so maybe she would take you on. You would be in the protection of a noble family. To interfere with their maid would be to offend the house.”
Lalasa thought of the proud lady's maids she saw sometimes, and thought she could never be one of them. Even so, she wouldn't have the opportunity, she thought wryly. Kel was the girl page, hardly a court lady with a retinue. What would she need from Lalasa, when she'd be too busy training and learning. Just like Gower, she could hardly be everywhere.
“It's too much trouble. Why would she take me?”
“You could make her life more comfortable, I know she'd find you useful. Besides,” he said, remembering the many mornings Kel had opened the door displaying bruises from her nightly patrols, “Keladry has made it known that she won't stand for bullies.”
Lalasa shifted, still clearly uncomfortable with the idea. Gower sighed and left the matter for a moment. He still had time to win her over.
Thinking of the determined and strong girl who'd survived a year of the tauntings of the other boys, Gower knew that Kel would be good for his niece. Even if Lalasa didn't know it yet.
