Title: Making preparations
Rating: G
Word Count: 388
Pairing: Kalasin/Kaddar
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: Kally needs stories before her wedding
“Daine?”
The small, human voice was made Daine’s teeth ache, her human jaw clenching as bat ears dulled to her human ones, the tiny pipistrellel squeaking protest as she pulled away and turned to face her visitor. Kally was smiling at the bat’s outrage.
“Did I interrupt something?”
“Oh, no. She just wants company.” Daine blinked rapidly, adjusting to the evening light that struggled into her workroom. Kally, backlit in the doorway, shook her head. “Are there bats in Carthakk?”
“Oh, fair hundreds, sweetling. And all the best kinds. You’ll have to write about them for me.”
“You need to write first.” Kally stepped inside the workroom, coming up to stand by her friend’s shoulder. “You need the practise. You’re terrible.”
“You’ve been telling me that since you were fourteen.”
“And it’s still true! You’re not allowed to get married without writing to m—”
“—Numair and I don’t—”
“—oh, I know you don’t, but you might.” Kally swallowed, shaking her head sharply to clear tears. “You might, and I wouldn’t be able to
come, you see. You you have to—”
The pipistrelle safe on a rail above the window that Lindhall Reed had thought up for her after the Immortals War, Daine pulled her friend into a hug. “I will write,” she said. “And you will write back.”
Kally sighed. “I’m being a baby.”
Daine sniffed. “You are not. You’re—it’s your father who—oh, odds bobs!” Loyalties and learning warred uncomfortably with old instinct, and the memory of Kally’s eyes when she knew that she would not be joining her brother in the Page’s Wing.
“Tell me about him?”
“I’m sorry?”
“About…about the Emperor. About Kaddar. He’s your friend, and—” The princess straightened, meeting Daine’s eyes in the dying light. “He’s your friend, and so he must be all right. That’s what I told myself, when I used to worry” she said, quiet and serious. Roald’s princess..no one’s even met her yet. You’ve met Kaddar. And didn't you beat him in shooting, once? And he freed Ozorne’s slaves on your say-so? And he studies plants…” Kally nodded, murmuring the next words to herself alone. “He can’t be too bad.”
The week before Kalasin left to prepare for her Imperial Wedding, she asked her friend for stories. And Daine, as always, gave what she could.
