Title: Champagne Rating: PG Prompt: #37, Acquired Taste Summary: Roger must get used to Daine. Daine wrinkled her nose, staring into her wineglass. The liquid was dull and thick; she couldn't even see her own reflection. "Roger, what is this?" His ankles were crossed delicately on the cushioned chair beside her. "Carthaki, estimated about fifteen years old. Very dry. Do you like it?" Daine laughed. "You're an encyclopaedia. I don't like it much, no. It's too bitter." "Bitterness, my dear, is an acquired taste." He leaned in and twined a strand of her hair around his finger. "You will enjoy it, soon. When you grow up." He grinned tauntingly, his blue eyes midnight-dark. "I trust you drink that bubbly, sweet stuff? Champagne?" The lilt at the end of his voice came out so comically that Daine had to laugh again. She turned to him, her mouth straightening. "I suppose that is an acquired taste to you, Roger," Daine said softly. "And goodness, fairness… you have yet to be acquainted with." She put her hands lightly on his shoulders, resting them there like a roosting bird. "Daine!" he exclaimed angrily, pulling out of her grasp. "Don't lecture me." She stared at him, lips parting. "This isn't a lecture. I'm telling you to try and be kind, and decent." She gripped his sleeve. "I'll swallow the blasted stuff. I promise." Her blue-grey eyes were clear and forbearing. Her chest heaved under her fashionable satin dress. "That's not realistic, Daine." Roger's eyes narrowed. "Leave, I don't need your twitter." Daine closed her eyes wearily and stood, shaking out her skirts. "I am grown. You are still fumbling with the taste many people have already acquired." Her hair cascaded down her shoulders in a smoky-brown mess. "I can live with your evil. Call when you can tolerate my good."

Daine is bamf. I love Daine. And, yes, this does sound like her putting someone in their place, and its Roger. Wow! Really interesting writing; I loved the whole idea of their relationship, as it was, and the conversation.

I absolutely adore every line of this. Anything containing Roger makes me happy and all of his lines are fabulous, especially the one about bitterness being an acquired taste. Oh, I just love it.
And Daine is wonderful too, as well as completely in-character! I could definitely see her reacting to Roger this way and it really makes me wish that Roger had somehow survived, just so he and Daine could meet each other in the books. Great job on this!

Daine/Roger is an unusual pairing, but you've pulled it off here. The flavours were really well integrated into their different philosophies, and I plain dislike Roger in most flavours (ssshh! Don't tell Katty), so I was glad to see Daine trump him.
