“I thought I might find you out here,” came a deep voice behind Vania.
She turned her head, and smiled. “Zahir,” she greeted him, without standing. Vania shifted on the grass so she could see him better. “You left the ball as well?”
The Bazhir knight strode across the grass and settled on the stone bench next to her. “Only to find you, Your Highness,” he said. “Your mother is having a fit.”
Vania shrugged. “Mama has plenty to worry about at Roald and Shinko’s wedding reception. I will just be in the way.” She glanced down at her midnight blue gown. “I probably have grass stains on my dress now, anyway. I can’t go back looking like a mess.”
Vania could Zahir was trying to hide a smile. He had been in attendance of the royal family long enough to known grass stains had never prevented her attending a function, much to the chagrin of her parents. “Do you want me to escort you back to your rooms?” he asked politely.
“In a moment,” Vania replied. “I’m enjoying the clear night.” She motioned towards the sky with one hand. “Look at the stars. Have you ever seen anything so lovely?”
Zahir looked up. “In the desert,” he began, “the stars are even brighter. We have no towns or Palace lights to dim the sky; you can see thrice as many stars. Some say you can almost glimpse the gods.”
Vania turned back to look at him. “Really?” she asked, wistfully. “That sounds beautiful.”
“It is very beautiful, Princess,” Zahir replied. “You should visit the tribes, someday.”
Vania smiled. She could easily imagine herself in the wide-open spaces of Southern Tortall. “I would like that very much.”
She stood, and dusted the damp grass off her dress. Vania held out her arm to Zahir. As the knight carefully took her arm, she shivered slightly, surprised by the warm brush of his touch.
“Are you cold?” Zahir looked down at her, concerned. “I didn’t bring a coat,” he added ruefully.
“A little cold,” Vania admitted, pulling his arm closer to her. She felt a thrill as his hands clasped hers, trying to warm them up. “You’re warm though,” she said shyly.
Zahir chuckled. “Let’s get you inside,” the knight said. "The Queen will be relieved to know where you are.”
Vania’s mouth twisted thoughtfully as they walked towards the Palace. If her mother was going to dispatch Zahir to find her, she might have to slip out of parties more often.
