Title: Beyond the sea Rating: G Team: Emelan Prompt: the sounds of earth-sea-sky Word count: 234 Summary: Adjustments.
Waves rush up the shore, frothing, white, before dragging themselves back out once again. Tris breathes in through her nose, a long, deep breath; the smell of salt is so strong, so there, that it’s almost unimaginable that she could forget it.
She catches Briar looking at her sidelong, and presses her lips together tightly.
“Never thought you were sentimental,” he says, teasingly.
“Neither did I,” she admits. From here, the sea looks glassy and blue-green, the sky a paler blue hanging above it. She looks out at it, and aches.
Lightsbridge is everything it was supposed to be. And though it’s a part of her—books and learning and wrapped up in paper—it isn’t all of her.
It isn’t this.
She doesn’t tell Briar how she sits in class and tilts her head, listening to the thunder overhead, separated from her by stretches of sandstone and vaulted ceilings; she doesn’t tell him that her breezes, caught up in her braided hair, have become her most precious reminder of home, and of her.
Sometimes, she sees the moon out of her window at night, and dreams of the sea.
The two of them walk back along the beach, and she doesn’t share any of it, doesn’t dare to, but when Briar’s hand brushes against hers and she breathes in a gulp of salty air, it’s another bit of home to carry with her.

(Go Emelan!) This is a lovely piece of writing, and I adore the prompt you used (of course, but still). This is especially beautiful: "Lightsbridge is everything it was supposed to be. And though it’s a part of her—books and learning and wrapped up in paper—it isn’t all of her."

Loved it. Tris is complicated and you captured her perfectly. I thought the Tris-Briar relationship was poignant and sweet here, too.
