We’ve spent the last week teasing and terrifying you all at the prospect of the wonderful competition we have dreamed up called the Goldenlake Olympics!
What are the Goldenlake Olympics?
Four teams will compete in a range of fan events, including writing, trivia, games and a few other surprise things we’ve planned. Participation in events will win points and ‘medals’, with the goal for a team to have the highest number of points at the end of the Olympics, thus winning the Olympics.
The teams will be based on the book series:
Team 1: Song of the Lioness & The Immortals
Team 2: Protector of the Small & Tricksters
Team 3: Emelan (all)
Team 4: Provost’s Dog and Short Stories (that don’t fit into other categories)
There will also be a prize for the highest individual point scorer across the Olympics.
When are the Olympics
The Goldenlake Olympics will run from Friday 20th July to Sunday 12th August. Individual events and competitions will be scheduled within those times, so check the schedule once it is released! There will also be continuous ways to win points, as well as ‘snap events’ over the three weeks, just to keep everyone on their toes.
What is this about teams?
We have decided that the team structure will be very flexible (unlike the real Olympics!) to allow everyone some fun. You can join one team and win points for them - or two, three or all of them, if you so desire! There is no issue with you formally or informally supporting multiple teams.
Each team will win points based on participation in events around their characters. If you enter an Emelan fic in a writing competition, you will win points for the Emelan Team. If you claim review points for a SotL fic, those points will go to the SotL/TI Team.
Each team will have a Team Leader (a nominated and voted for character), a Team Mascot (also nominated and voted for character), Team Colours and a Team Motto. These will all be chosen in the lead up to the Olympics. Each Team will also be assigned a moderator (sadly, you don’t get to vote on these – Admin will choose).
How are points calculated?
Points calculation formulas will remain top secret until the last days before the Olympics start. Effectively though, points are designed to reward participation and engagement in the events. There will be points for submissions of fics, reviews of fics, participation in trivia events, and so forth. Once a week, the Olympics board will be closed for a couple of hours for Admin to go through and tally up the scores.
Are there any rules?
Yes there are! These will vary within each event, so make sure to check the guidelines for the events. General ones though:
1) All Goldenlake board rules, including fanfiction rules, apply.
2) While this is a competition, we will not tolerate aggression, smack-talk or bullying between teams. If Admin feel the need to step in, we may remove users from the competition and penalize teams.
3) Have fun!
You said something about the top point scorer?
So I did! Goldenlake Admin has decided to reward the top point scorer in the entire Olympics with a prize! That prize will be revealed later, but we can tell you it is something tangible and awesome!
