Title: Leaps and bounds
Rating: G
Prompt: #74 technology
Summary: "What is it?" Evvy asks.
A/N: It's been so long since I read anything with Evvy in it, so her characterisation is probably a little bit off.
Evvy is sunning herself in the front garden when the creak of wagon wheels makes her prick her ears. The grass is short, and when she turns her head towards the gate, it tickles her nose. The thrum of rock and earth is magnetic underneath her; if it wasn't such a beautiful day, she'd be content to let the ground swallow her right up.
The gate opens to reveal a waterfall of sensible blue skirts. Evvy sighs and rolls over onto her stomach. Even though Tris's magic is most similar to her own, Evvy can't abide the disapproval she always seems to feel when in the weather mage's presence. The briefest look makes her feel small. Insignificant. Intentional or not on, Evvy promised herself long ago that she would never let another person make her feel that way.
With Tris, it is a constant struggle.
"Home alone?" Tris asks, her shadow putting an abrupt end to Evvy's lazy sunbaking.
"Yes." She's not sulking. She's not.
"Good. I have something to show you."
The device is odd. Like nothing she's ever seen before. She runs a finger over one of the small glass plates.
Tris takes the plate and rubs the surface between thumb and forefinger, using her blouse to smooth away the smudges. She frowns, then places it back into position. Evvy watches, curiosity making her twitch, as Tris turns one of the brass knobs.
"What is it?" Evvy asks.
"It doesn't have a name," Tris says absently, bending her head and squinting down the eyepiece. "Not yet. A friend in Tharios made it."
"But what does it do?"
"Bring a stone," Tris orders. She turns the knob once more before straightening, rubbing her eyes beneath her spectacles. "Something pretty."
Evvy digs into her pocket, then produces a piece of quartz. She hands it over. The look Tris gives her is almost amused.
Tris places the quartz on the small tray beneath the tunnel of glass plates. She moves away from the table. "Now, look."
The tea is bitter and dark, another discovery from Tris's wandering. Evvy sips it slowly, letting the warmth wash over her, trying to suppress the tingling thrill of excitement. Tris is still, her own cup cradled in her lap, eyes distant, and Evvy thinks that she isn't seeing Rosethorn's garden at all.
"Some of the stone-sellers had these...things," Evvy blurts, the silence of the afternoon shattering. Tris turns her head and inclines it slightly, to show that she is listening. "Like spyglasses, I guess," Evvy continues, "but really small and not anywhere as thick." She holds up thumb and forefinger, only a little way apart.
"To look at their stones?" asks Tris.
Evvy nods. "Some people who sold to them would try to pass off fakes. The glasses made you see the stone up close. I... found one, once."
Tris only nods.
"But nothing like this." Evvy bites her lip, remembering. The tiny details and rivets had appeared huge, every facet of the quartz magnified; and, she could see the magic, as plain as the nose on her face.
"I'm planning a return trip next month," says Tris, and there's a question in her voice, Evvy's sure of it.
"When do we leave?"
