Summary: Magic can lead to leaps and bounds in technology, even when it seems unnecessary.
“What is that?” Briar asks, leaning over Daja’s shoulder and inspecting the sheet of metal she’s working on.
She swats him back. “Careful, it’s still cooling.”
“But what is it?” He bobbles side to side behind her, watching his reflection flicker.
“It’s a image recorder. Once I’m done, it’ll be able to magically hold images for as long as the owner desires.” Briar looks at her quizzically. “Whatever it reflects when the magic solidifies it will keep showing, no matter where the plate is moved.”
“What, portraits aren’t good enough for you?” He pops a grape in his mouth.
She frowns, focusing her attention on her work. “You have to change with the times, Briar.”
“At least paint has different colors.”
Daja twists the backing of the metal slightly. “I hope that I’ll eventually be able to reflect colors.”
“So a colored copper plate?”
“Pretty much. It should look like enamel, but more realistic than paints.”
He chews another grape. “That is the oddest project I’ve ever seen you work on.”
She plucks a grape from his fingertips. “Like you can talk. If I recall, you tried to grow a money tree. Even after Rosethorn told you it was a ridiculous idea.”
Briar tilts his head to the side. “You can’t tell me it wasn’t worth a shot. Imagine if it worked!” He looks at Daja expectantly. She just shakes her head.
