“What did you do to yourself?” Alanna cried upon seeing Gary standing on crutches in her doorway. She shut her partially unpacked trunk and indicated for him to sit. He accepted, extending his right leg as he sat.
“I fell down the stairs Monday. The healer said I would be fine by Wednesday, but alas.” Gary flexed his foot, feeling the tendons twinge with the small movement.
Alanna frowned. “You weren’t in Naxen?”
He shook his head once. “Father had some unexpected work so we stayed. There was only a month after the summer trip.”
Alanna’s mouth twitched. “I remember. I barely returned home before we were back on the road.”
Gary nodded. “Even so, how was Trebond?”
She sighed, tilting her head back. “Wonderful. Much nicer than here, where everyone yells for the slightest mistakes.”
Gary laughed. “How do you think I feel, being kin to one of them?”
Alanna wrinkled her nose and retorted, “Mine wasn’t much better, you know.”
“But you escape him for much of the year.”
“Only to bow down to yours!”
“I suppose you’re right,” he said with a grin. He paused, then exclaimed, “You haven’t given me a hug yet, Alan!”
She laughed and embraced her friend. “I didn’t want to break you.”
“I’ll be as good as new by,” he stopped to frown, “Well, supposedly by two days ago. But soon!”
She gently knocked Gary on the shoulder. “You better be! I don’t want to see you escape training because you’re clumsy.”
Gary cocked his head. “I doubt the masters would be fond of giving me time off. I’m sure they’ll steal my crutches, hang them twenty feet in the hair, and force me to climb for them if I’m still hobbling by Monday.” Alanna opened her mouth to interrupt, but Gary raised his hand to stop her. “And if I were to fall, they would hoist them higher.”
Alanna sported a half smile. “Don’t break yourself, please.”
Gary smirked. “Why? Afraid that I’ll force you to be my personal servant?”
“No, that Jon will.”
“Oh please,” a voice said from behind. Alanna and Gary turned to see Jonathan leaning against the paneling. “I’d make you suffer, Gary.”
“Welcome back, dear friend,” Gary called. “How I’ve missed you. Really, truly, the palace isn’t the same without your charming wit.”
“Shut up, will you?” Jon said, and came forward to hug his friend.
